there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

This 3rd country removals court opinion coming immediately on the heels of the House of Bishops’ pastoral letter yesterday which did not mention immigration is really making me furious that The Episcopal Church, as an institution, is simply failing to meet the moment. ⚓️
I do not always agree with the distinction between punishment and consequences, but this essay is great and absolutely correct that depriving people of institutional power is 1) often necessary and 2) not punishment.
Nicole Bedera@nbedera.bsky.social · 6d agoAnd I know this thread is already long, so I’m going to wrap it up with a link to Sara Ahmed’s beautiful essay about how it’s actually okay for perpetrators to face the consequences of their actions—including exclusion from the social spaces where they abused their power.
I’m all for RJ and TJ diversion programs, but “write an essay” isn’t a restorative justice process and “ignore the frat house problem” isn’t transformative justice. Just evading accountability.
This is actually the point of Torture and Eucharist: authoritarian states want to destroy all social bodies except the individual and the state, and so recreating social bodies (including the church as a social body) is essential.

This is really, deeply bad in obvious ways. Even if they aren't ACTIVELY using it nefariously, every step toward more secrecy and disappearance makes abuse easier and more likely. "Disappearing" people!

As of last week, anyone jailed by ICE with a final order of removal will NOT appear in the ICE Online Detainee Locator System, making them effectively vanish.
