If you just happened to pick this week to start yelling about the importance of academic freedom, I sure hope you did more than watch silently for the past 18 months as the Trump administration assaulted everything from mRNA vaccine research to gender studies to the very idea of having universities.

Mark Carney: "In recent days. the US proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermine the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal. In short, they asked too much and they offered too little ... You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked."

“Nobody can make you feel shame (.) It’s what Gisele Pelicot told the world (.) But it’s a semi-magical quality that some people have (.) perhaps those who struggle most are people whose brains are built differently, like Jason’s" @carolecadwalla.bsky.social broligarchy.substack.com/p/the-jason-...

The Jason Arday Reckoning

The attempts to cover up the complicity of the UK media’s role in his death may be its sickest move yet

(AI actually has been used in science and medicine for decades and is incredibly good at doing things like finding cancer that can’t be seen with the human eye but that is a completely different type of AI then we’re all angry about it and we shouldn’t discuss them in the same conversations TBH)

Talk to the people who would use this for dream use cases — the cancer scientists, the people who want to make material goods out of it — and they will tell you it’s either a marginally useful if unreliable trick or completely useless. It has produced 0% of the utopian products promised.

We do not build the reservoirs needed to store the rain that falls here. We do not build strategic food reserves needed to maintain provision in hard times. We failed to build effective stores of PPE, to protect us in pandemics. This country has long been governed by people who do not prepare.

Lots of debate about the infamous furin cleavage site (FCS) in SARS-CoV-2 and it's alleged uniqueness. But Paul Bieniasz see "numerous examples of potential FCS acquisition...during normal coronavirus replication", concluding "such events are likely commonplace". www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Genetic innovation in coronaviruses driven by a viral nuclease

Genetic variation in viruses is well known to arise from polymerase-driven nucleotide misincorporation. However, insertion and deletion (indel) mutations that occur at lower, largely unknown, frequenc...

Pretty in pink 💗 This is an elephant hawk-moth, one of our most striking visitors and we think it's really rather beautiful. You may have seen one fluttering around at dusk in your garden. They can also be seen in parks, woodland edges or grassy habitats. 📸 Rob Coleman, Sheringham Park
