Just over 20 years ago, I helped Ian Dowse with the implementation of a scheme called dirhash on FreeBSD, and then we wrote a paper on it. I went looking for the paper last night and got an AI summary that conflated our scheme with another, but you wouldn't know unless you were an expert already.

Dirhash is a feature in FreeBSD that computes the hash of a directory's content, similar to a checksum. It uses a hash table for efficient file searching, improving performance by avoiding linear searches. Dirhash supports various hashing algorithms, including MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and more, and can create SUM files for verification purposes.
