1984 is not a particularly complex book and it's very important to it's politics that the punishment for wrongthink is not simply collective disagreement or namecalling. It's being imprisoned by the state and subjected to physical torture.
Yeah, yeah, there's no ethical consumption under capitalism. And yes, I still use some services provided by corporations run by monsters. But I'm doing my gat damnedest not to buy any NEW shit from obvious monsters.
It's a big $0 for me, but I'm very happy for the people who are at least getting a piece of what they're owed.

To me, the foundational tension of modern AI is this: If the stated goal is to create a human-level intelligence that can replace human workers but lacks human rights, then the real aspiration is slavery; but if human-level intelligence is impossible, then the industry's stated goal is a lie.

My dad mentioned the eclipse the other day and it has been pretty cloudy up here in New York. But the real reason my reaction was largely a shrug is because we were in the path of totality a couple years ago. That makes it tough to feel excited about lesser eclipses.
