In 2025, Ontario banned automated traffic enforcement. Now the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit has surged, according to traffic data.

What’s happened since? A spike in reckless driving. On Ottawa’s Katimavik Road, 86% of drivers obeyed the limit when cameras were in use. Now just 20% do. In Toronto, the share of vehicles >11 kmh over the limit jumped 4x. In Guelph, the share of cars >15 kmh over has more than tripled.

To appease wealthy residents, The City of Ottawa is spending millions of dollars trying to block the redevelopment of this golf course in Kanata. Compared even to one of the lowest income parts of the city, Kanata Lakes pays very little in property taxes. The city can't afford this.

This is what living in a city is all about. Having spaces to share with each other and do the things we love.

This summer, we kept the lights on all night, every night, at five soccer fields across New York City.

This was the scene at Calvert Vaux Park in Gravesend, Brooklyn Tuesday night.

I just watched an emergency vehicle come along King Edward through Somerset E intersection at very high speed. It makes me wonder if all the recommendations of the @strongtownsottawa.ca Crash investigation were implemented. Coming up that hill you can't see the high use pedestrian crosswalk.

The research I do relies on the bound volumes of the bylaws and minutes of the City of Ottawa, dating back over a century. I’ve spent hours in the Main Branch Ottawa Room with these books (pictured). Sadly, this resource was recently “discarded” by the library. It’s a loss for local history.

And here's where the city plans to spend the $478 million from the Feds and province: Suburban arterial roads, intersections, and a parking lot make up 54%. A rec center for Riverside South, 38%. And a couple sewer projects, 8%.

We must do everything possible to build more homes and the infrastructure to support them. That includes cutting our development charges to lower the cost of homes while still investing in critical roads, transit, water, and wastewater infrastructure.

There is no reason to have an either/or here. We can both reduce development charges to help make more housing types available as well as bring the cost of housing down, AND we can invest into more non-profit housing like many other cities around the world do, to ensure livable homes for all!

Development charge reductions will likely flow to developers' bottom lines instead of directly reducing housing prices. We'll see if that has the intended outcome of getting shovels in the ground. Funding not-for-profit housing would be a more direct way to ensure affordability.
