Normally I just appreciatively read @jamellebouie.net 's columns-sharable video content just isn't my bag. But this is a very, very, very trenchant piece of commentary that captures a lot of how I increasingly understand the disjunction between the commentary environment and on-the-ground politics.
The pundits have completely lost the plot

Rubin will repeatedly image COSMOS over the next decade, complementing earlier observations from other telescopes and helping scientists better study how the sky changes over time.🔭🧪
I love capturing those moments where London Underground trains line up perfectly with station posters. With a little patience and a bit of luck, you can end up with some wonderfully amusing and unexpected shots.
The Molten Ring galaxy is a gravitationally lensed galaxy 9.4 billion light-years away. A galaxy cluster 4 billion light-years away magnifies the light of the galaxy by a factor of 20, helping astronomers use Hubble to study its properties in more detail: http://bit.ly/49MnaDV

At today's UKRI board meeting, the fate of UK particle physics and astronomy will likely be decided. Have we done enough to convince the powers-that-be to halt the proposed funding cuts? 🤞 Read Prof. Hiranya Peiris in Nature today eloquently explaining why these cuts are wrong.🧪🔭⚛️ 📖: rdcu.be/friwM
Stars of physics are in Westminster right now to call on the Government to halt funding cuts to astronomy and particle physics research. Professor Brian Cox called them "inexplicable", urging the Government to instead "trust, inspire and continue to invest in the next generation of scientists".
New in PN: A vote away from undoing the civil war "The only role for a functional SCOTUS would have been to deny a cert request by saying, 'Did the lower court stutter?' Instead, we came within one vote of letting the worst people in the country run roughshod over one of America's sacred compacts."

The moment we've all been waiting for is finally here… On June 29, 2026, NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory officially began the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST)! 🔭🧪☄️🌌 🔗: rubinobservatory.org/news/action-...
Why? Because the Universe isn't static, and some of the most important cosmic events happen when nobody is expecting them! By returning to each patch of sky hundreds of times over ten years, we'll build the most complete picture yet of what's out there, and how it changes.🔭🧪
Jalen Brunson: “You’re allowed to think about the worst possible scenario. But you gotta go out there and do something about it.” A good mantra for fighting fascism too.
The long-term time-domain legacy of the Hubble Space Telescope is amazingly rich and especially now, as it connects to JWST and soon, Roman. Love to see our dynamic Universe! @stsci.edu
Two telescopes, two epochs, the same nebula. You might have to stare for a little bit to fully appreciate all the movement going. Apologies to any faint stars who got deleted. I tried to remove the NICMOS PSFs from the Hubble view (which is lower resolution/blurrier)
Anything written by @joshuasokol.bsky.social is a must read. I also take solace that there are infinite wonders out there in the Universe that no AI has ever seen or could adequately describe. For now, and I think still for a long time to come, humans apprehend the Universe and give it meaning.
What is the value of human beings studying the cosmos? For @michaelgreshko.bsky.social at Science, I dug into how practitioners of humanity's oldest exact science are metabolizing the latest developments in AI...and how it seems to be forcing them to wrestle with philosophical questions.
I have often been critical of the leadership @aaas.org but they just took action on the new OMB rules that will politicize science, speaking out and notifying members. I hope all take the time to follow their advice, contact Congress, and most important, post a comment www.aaas.org/news/aaas-st...
Holy cow! Feast your eyes a while, on this gorgeous solar spectrum by the Sol'Ex instrument (assembled by Váradi Nagy Pál). It extends to UV and IR as well as the visible band. Marvel at the F lines, the fine structure, the IR doublets and repeating lines, and the molecular bands. Wonderful! ☀️🧪⚛️🔭
This photo of Andy Kim in the moments before ICE gassed everyone at Delaney Hall is going into the history books. We need more of this from our electeds.
What I witnessed and experienced today was shameful. Delaney Hall is a failure; it’s this administration’s failure. The only way to make this right for our communities is to shut it down and make sure the failures we’ve seen never happen again. 4/4

We are used to the Moon and the Sun rising and setting, so this seems normal, but it’s important to note that Earthset or Earthrise only happens in orbit around the moon. From the surface of the Moon, the Earth just floats at basically one spot in the sky! That’s even more amazing! 1/2
