Hyperlink text should make sense when read out of context. Screen reader users can navigate from link to link, and can listen to links in a list. When navigating this way, only the link is read. So "click here" or "read more" won't make sense.

If you're in San Diego, come hear about Inventing ELIZA on Oct. 8. I'll be there in person, and Team ELIZA virtually. Thanks, to Jessica Pressman for all the support!

Promotional poster for an Inventing ELIZA book talk with Mark C. Marino at SDSU’s Digital Humanities Center on Thursday, October 8, 12:30–1:45 PM. The orange and blue poster features the MIT Press book cover and describes Inventing ELIZA as a critical analysis of Joseph Weizenbaum’s original chatbot and its impact on ideas about AI and society. Marino will appear in person, with co-authors joining via Zoom. The poster includes SDSU Digital Humanities branding and a QR code.

You don't necessarily want to use the exact same alt text each time a specific image is used. Alt text must consider the context of the image and why it's being included on a site, post, article, etc. In other words, alt text depends on where you're including the image and why.

Microsoft Word inexplicably keeps unselecting “Include footnotes” in my document word count. So I keep having these sweet moments of elation that I’ve gotten a chapter under the word limit, only to realize I need to kill another 1000+ darlings.

It’s nice to see everyone’s textual analysis of The Odyssey It’s almost like the humanities give you entertainment, feelings, pleasure, and fun/interesting stuff to talk about, as well as lenses into both past and current society

"Investment" models of reading are truly terrible. They are markers of our descent into an economic cynicism that knows the cost of everything but can measure value only in terms of a currency already known, and books reward us in ways we do not expect.

A glass bowl shattered in my hands while I was making dressing. After an hour picking glass shards out of my garbage disposal with salad tongs and chopsticks I feel pretty confident I could take all of y'all in Operation.

My book highlights how stories construct whiteness even through its narrative suppression and erasure. If the alt text for my illustrations/figures discussed blackness instead of whiteness, for example, they would replicate the same move of invisibilizing whiteness that my book analyzes

A common question about alt text is whether or not it's appropriate to mention attributes like race or skin tone. A common response is, "It depends." In this post, Tolu Adegbite explains how race can be relevant and important in providing context. medium.com/shopify-ux/t...

All our careful labor to make our courses and scholarship accessible, to advocate for accessibility with colleagues at our institutions and in our disciplines, is co-opted by privatized EdTech, with its ethics of capture and surveillance and which seek to make us disposable. It gnaws at me.

Not to mention an accessibility crisis. Online teaching opens up so many possibilities for people; losing it means leaving disabled people in the dust again

One challenge* with "just incorporate AI into the pedagogy!" is that to do thaf well means a LOT of focus on the evaluation + creation levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, without the foundational skill-building in "recall" and "analysis." *Among the many other challenges.

The interesting question is not who uses Zotero or does not use Zotero. The interesting question is which academics enjoy working conditions that allow them to make scholarship central to their professional lives, and which academics have to do scholarship <in spite> of their working conditions.

Critical technology practice happens in the gap between "this tool works" and "when, where, how and for whom does this device work? Under what conditions does it fail, who pays the cost, and how do these failures get remediated?"
