Affective Old Truant

I'm an effective altruist mainly reading and boosting posts, but occasionally I'll muse and doodle about #EffectiveAltruism. I take a balanced approach, so will highlight under-represented views—my opinions will no doubt become apparent :)

Is the reason that these so-called pro Palestinians went after Dolly is because she's a capitalist? Well I'm sorry to tell you someone smart with her money was much more effective in helping people around her, than Mackenzie Scott's plan to enrich charities with zero accountability

*reading Everything More Forever to my spouse before bed* me: “…interviewed by ezra klein” her: *groans* me “Open Philanthropy is mostly funded through the fortune of Dustin Moskovitz, one of the co-founders of Facebook..” her: 😤😤😤 ALL THESE PEOPLE HAVE THE WITCH’S NIPPLE 😤😤😤

TESCREAL stands for : 🚀🎇 Transhumanism, 🚀🎇 Extropianism, 🚀🎇Singularitarianism, 🚀🎇 Cosmism, 🚀🎇 Rationalism, 🚀🎇Effective Altruism, and 🚀🎇 Longtermism.

I have friends who are EA or EA adjacent, and my impression is that the longtermism + existential risk thing sucked all the air out of the room, and there's been a push to get back to basics. But it's not exactly my universe!

But I'd also like to point out that the company that says you can have a business of 100 people doing the work of 1,000, credited 24 people in the production of this one report. So I'll continue to take their bombastic claims on their tech's capabilities with a large serving of salt. (22/22)

Marina Favaro and Jack Clark co-authored this piece, with editorial support from Santi Ruiz. Shan Carter, Romello Goodman, and Nikki Makagiansar created the visuals from data collected by Brian Calvert and Jun Shern Chan. Daniel Freeman, Jim Baker, Max Young, Sarah Pollack, Francesco Mosconi, Holden Karnofsky, Andy Jones, Kevin Troy, Anton Korinek, Meg Tong, Andrew Ho, Dan Altman, Drake Thomas, Jack Shen, Sasha de Marigny, and Avital Balwit provided feedback.

It seem Leopold Aschenbrenner really loves Amodei. At Holden Karnofsky & Daniela Amodei's wedding, guests were asked to read Habermas's Theory of Communicative Action and donate to GiveWell instead of bringing gifts. so...

We should uplift the living who deserve it but one thing you absolutely cannot say about Miss Parton was that she wasn't given her flowers while she was still around. She has been the go-to example of actual effective altruism and ethical celebrity for over a decade by everyone but the bigots.

And here I thought it was "interesting" that Daniela Amodei, also co-founder of Anthropic and Dario Amodei's sister was married to Holden Karnofsky, who ran (one of?) the biggest Effective Altruism funds, Open Philanthropy. Which, of course, produces a lot of ideology around AI

here's an excerpt of my undergrad thesis from 2018 where I'm hating on race realism as part of a critique of the concept of speciesism, which was coincidentally (and ironically) popularized by race realism defender and enjoyer, Peter Singer.

Firstly, even if this natural difference in IQ were true, it doesn't follow that you should be allowed to treat someone unjustly because they're less intelligent. But this doesn't even matter, for race realism is nothing more than a belief system that tries to justify racism by basing it in "science", despite the fact that it isn't supported by science at all. There simply isn't a biological basis behind racism; while race is definitely a social and cultural phenomenon, humans simply don't differ enough genetically to be broken into discrete "races" (Templeton, 2013). This meansthat grouping "races" by their IQ doesn't work, causing the foundation of race realism to fall apart. But still, the white supremacists insist upon it, because in their minds, black people are not able to have any desirable traits not are they themselves allowed to have any undesirable traits. Group membership isn't just about skin colour here; group membership is built upon who has or does not have particular properties.

I was confused because when you said "longtermism is eugenic," I thought that you were making an unironic argument that longtermism is good because it is eugenic, which is what the longtermists say. And this paper is arguing no its not because its dysgenic.
