Affective Old Truant

@effectivealtruist.bsky.social

I'm an effective altruist mainly reading and boosting posts, but occasionally I'll muse and doodle about #EffectiveAltruism. I take a balanced approach, so will highlight under-represented views—my opinions will no doubt become apparent :)

It's such a fucking letdown to realize that most of his principles go back to utilitarianism and rationalism and longtermism. He'll ignore mass human suffering now for hypothetical future gains and he'll never get past being a capitalist. He'll unironically trolley problem situations.

problem with AI is, as many have already said, that it’s being peddled by individuals with the ambition and moral standards of the machines in the matrix

Morality and power are antithetical forces under #ArmageddonCapitalism 💲 >💚 = 🔥🌎 Ambition to work with narcissists is generated by self-loathing Moral people have too much self-respect to desire such company It's why some politicians are "generational talent" - they sacrifice personal happiness

I've just read @rutgerbregman.com's latest book "Moral Ambition" and really blown away by it (despite the awkward use of Hogwarts as an analogy), it's really fired me up and made me really want to find my own group of tight knit people who share the world view and want to put it into action.

At the weekend, Flora joined a protest on Paros following the devastating wildfires that scorched around 10% of the island. Local animal charities called for an end to tethering and an effective rescue plan to protect animals during disasters. Animals must not be left trapped.

Absolutely, the refusal to use old yardsticks of benevolence. I think the EA/longtermism move has been too quickly forgotten with SBF’s fall too: creating conditions for propagation of future lives eclipses attention to present lives.

I don’t think Yarvinism is a thing and Thiel on most days feels like a distraction but the EA/longtermism/existential risk ideas of Macaskill, Bostrom definitely have some heft as well as more farfetched transhumanism of people like Kurzweil.
