Well I made it to Litomyšl for the Jan Švankmajer: Reliquaries and Fetishes exhibition at Miroslav Kubik Gallery! What a thrill, got to meet a couple of bonafide movie stars in the White Rabbit and Little Otik. Also great to see some brand new pieces for 2026 - 92 and still going strong..!

Expect projects like this to become rare. WB and Paramount are being folded into Skydance. Evidence of their unique corporate identities will get scrubbed, as when Disney took over Fox. And the recent execs who were barely interested in history are being replaced with people who have zero interest.
As we're 2 weeks away from THE DEVILS return, and learning of the departure of the WB studio team that helped make it possible, it's a good time to repost my history of the film in America, with its edits, suppression, and return to availability. projectorhasbeendrinking.blogspot.com/2026/06/disp...

In August I spoke with Rick Baker about his career after he received a lifetime achievement award at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland! This was a real full circle moment for me. One of the first interviews I ever did when I was green was with Baker at TCMFF in 2012.
Rick Baker tells Marya E. Gates about his groundbreaking career in special-effects makeup, from building Bigfoot for Harry and the Hendersons to collaborating with Eddie Murphy on Coming to America and The Nutty Professor. https://boxd.it/3oe
31 movies that properly frightened me! Yay spooky season! 1. Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse (Kairo). Absolutely terrifying. It’s messier than Cure but this just scares the crap out of me. Such dread.
Shout out to everyone else who cried “No! Why?” from the other side of the road to the bus that always comes two minutes late but came one minute early as it sailed past them this morning.
If you’re wondering “how much effort did Brad Dourif give his role as a hot convict in the music video for Toto’s Stranger in Town in 1984?” The answer is 110%. m.youtube.com/watch?v=RSel...

I keep quoting Al Nash’s Harry Kane impression to myself every time he’s on screen. “Can I have my cheese back, please?”
Ain’t no shit-eating grin like a 90s Tim Roth shit-eating grin.
Watched Bill Duke’s Hoodlum yesterday and very much enjoyed. Laurence Fishburne is superb as Bumpy Johnson, backed by an awesome supporting cast (Chi McBride, Loretta Devine, Cicely Tyson, Clarence Williams III, Queen Latifah). Tim Roth goes BIG, Andy Garcia is hilarious. Big Untouchables vibes.
I am obsessed with Hope. A delirious, hilarious, gripping batshit epic with incredible cinematography and action, it has so many ideas it can’t sensibly fit them all into a 2.5 hour running time that flies by. I didn’t want it to end. Big swing brilliance that’s not afraid to fall on its face.
Alex is the best of the best. Commission her now.
Bluesky cuties, consider this a good old fashioned call-out for work! I've landed safely thanks to your support, but financially things are still a little struggletown. This thread is really to remind commissioning type folks, producers and editors of the kind of work I do. Signal boosts welcome! 🧵

My 2026 has been a divorce-shaped Stygian nightmare of housing insecurity, drifting between Airbnbs, couchsurfing + housesitting. But the goddess just blessed me with my own tiny apartment! I need to move/furnish it for myself + kid almost from scratch: a humble call for help if you can to do so!
See THE INNOCENTS on a big screen! I must have watched it on a small one a dozen times before I finally caught it at the Cinematek in Brussels, with an audience. It was a whole new experience. Freddie Francis's widescreen cinematography! Everyone gasping in unison! Book your ticket now, if you can.
One of the great ghost stories, THE INNOCENTS, returns to the PCC in a beautiful 4K restoration Wed 21st Oct at 1pm. 🎟️: buff.ly/VLE7c2M
Rewatched Mortal Kombat tonight and I’ve gotta say: I really enjoyed it at the cinema, but I LOVED it as an exhausted midweek movie.

One of our audience comment cards at work for Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma was a drawing of Little Death with “I ❤️ Jack Haven”. I know I want to see more Jack Haven work!

Happy birthday Stephen King! Here (for the umpteenth time, sorry) are some photographs I took of him encountering a fish-paste sandwich in London, 1983.
Good morning, I just remembered the film Spiral: From the Book of Saw.

Tonight! Join us as Sam Neill finds out what is waiting for him and humanity In the Mouth of Madness!
Dundee! This Sunday, join us at Bizarro Video Club for a screening of John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness from VHS at Canvas from 6pm! God’s not supposed to be a hack horror writer but Sam Neill is gonna find that reality is not what it used to be!
incredibly well-done resident evil teaser from a movie theater
Had an absolute blast with Resident Evil. Giggled for 90 minutes in the best way. Lovely gooey surprises and, as a terrible gamer, it spoke to me. Were people really upset that it wasn’t about freaking Leon? A panicking dingus who’s bad at guns is the perfect lead for this, loads of fun.
They could just make mini webisodes of Reacher Volunteering at the Shelter and sell the hell out of the show. Large Man Slowly Walking Elderly Dog. Large Man Bottlefeeding Kittens. Large Man Punches Guy in Parking Lot for Abandoning Pet. Everyone would catch up and tune in for season 5.

May your morning start as mine has, remembering the cover for Reaper Man in the group chat.
BotD in 1947: the much-missed and very lovely Sam Neill. I interviewed him in 2001, circa THE DISH, highly recommended if you're in need of a feelgood film.
SAM NEILL: THE 2001 INTERVIEW
In May 2001, just after I’d left London to go and live in Paris, The Sunday Telegraph (for which I’d been reviewing films throughout most of the 1990s) asked me to pop back to London to…
