Just rewatched O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?, and am now imagining showing that to a group of early 20s hipsters types and telling them that if they were that age in 2000, statistically speaking, they would all know someone who owned the soundtrack

Is everyone aware of the General Motors streetcar conspiracy? In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.

So not sure if there will also be encore screenings, but there will be 17 or so *additional* films (to a schedule already so overstuffed that it's full of one-off screenings fighting each other) crammed into NZIFF in the week following the "end" of the festival, at least in Auckland.

This morning, I did not know I would get to speak to Sir Ian Mune in front of a packed Hollywood Avondale crowd after SLEEPING DOGS as the finale to this week's Sam Neill tribute. A real privilege and a joy to hear Mune roll off one amusing anecdote after another.
