These remind me a bit of Gabriel Morrissette; not to deny either artist their individuality but merely a shared aesthetic, almost like is there a kind Canadian approach? Like a Group of Seven style....but for Canadian comic book artists? Lol

A line that got cut but sums up some of my overall feelings: This Odyssey is not a rich, satisfying Homeric banquet, but sometimes in the heat, an ice-cold Philly water ice is all you want - even it's mostly sugar and food coloring, and makes no nutritional sense.
Once more I'm brooding about how we process stories differently, and the notion of whether you observe characters or you identify with them (or see a character almost like an avatar into the story). Not that there"a a right/wrong way to process a story but there are different/conflicting ways
A piece that goes off on tangents about race and growing up and life to the point where halfway thru you might be thinking "uh, wasn't this supposed to be about Superman?" BUT then you realize you don't care becaus the digressions are so interesting and heartfelt and thought-provoking...

The funny thing about modern pop culture/criticism: is the way critics always act like Christopher Nolan is this radical auteur going against the grain when he makes movies about (checks notes) Oppenheimer, Batman, and The Odyssey lol (No diss of Nolan, just think it's funny)

TOS trivia time! Many people were suprised in STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE that the ENTERPRISE suddenly had an "Executive Officer" or "Exec." Actually, though, that role aboard starships WAS established in The Original Series — but by whom and in what episode?
TIL on Amazon you can report typos as if TOS violations. What a...weird way to read; not enjoying the story but grammar policing like a hall monitor. I mean, sure, if so many typos it affects reading but I've rarely read something that didn't have some gaffs and, y'know, you just press on...
I probably would have never discovered comics or half the sci-fi and fantasy I came to love if it weren’t for corner stores and grocery stores carrying comics and books. Accessibility is everything. If your parents aren’t into this stuff chances are you might not get a chance these days either.

Was randomly thinking how we learn things growing up. And how, as a small kid, I learned the difference between copyright and trademark because of the whole Captain Marvel/Shazam thing in the 1970s comics lol.
Learning moment: I was reading the recent Alpha Flight written by Ed Brisson and thinking it would be interesting if Marvel got a Canadian to write the team. And then I realized Brisson IS Canadian lol. I should add: this was not a criticism of Brisson's script, but makes an interesting...1/3
And suddenly I'm ten years old again, clutching my Tarzan novel while my brother holds his Conan book... :)

Had a story rejected that I 100% wrote to indulge my creative whims that I knew was unlikely to find favour; but I thought maybe taking such a swing would win out thru simple cheeky audacity... But no. And I knew it wouldnt. Still hurts a bit :( Welp, back to trying to write to please editors lol
Here's Jacqueline Hill and Sean Connery in Requiem for a Heavyweight, 1957. It was directed by Hill's husband, Alvin Rakoff, who had only used Connery in bit parts. Connery used to call Rakoff begging for work. Hill convinced Rakoff to give Connery the lead bc "the ladies will like him."

A weird aspect of US politics (from an outsider pov) is how the presumption is that almost every politician is at least eyeing the presidency. It kind of reduces so much of political punditry (even among progressives) to sports commentary and makes every politician seem vaguely insincere...1/2
My favourite of the Halmi/Hallmark "classics" productions (maybe because it was less an adaptation); never seemed to find it in DVD stores (tho the Canadian-made prequel, Young Merlin, shows up a lot lol) RIP Sam Neil (first thing I remember him from: Reilly Ace of Spies)

Finally got around to to reading this (proof that, yes, "intermittent" reposting can be a useful nudge lo). Liked it :) in a way reminded me of the superhero genre: a deft layering of the silly with serious. The characters and their emotions are real even as they exist in an absurd reality.
