The cat is officially out of the bag. I promised a consequential first, here it is! On (or around) October 6th, for the first time in its 20+ year history, the SPC Mesoanalysis will be available to the field in real time via NCEP NOMADS. Oh, and it’s in NetCDF, not GRIB.
This might be the most dystopian thing I’ve ever read. That response has me 💀 though What if…we focused using AI to eliminate the *tedious* parts of life? Or maybe Sam’s kids are tedious…

This was also true of Ashli Babbitt on January 6th. So what’s the difference? I’d love to hear any other meaningful difference other than where they landed with regards to supporting Trump.

Being military, I wonder how many voted for the current administration? Doesn’t make this right, but my attitude right now is that until people are forced to deal with consequences of their choices rather than hypotheticals that things might veer away from the sheer lunacy we’re living under.

Several female officers say they see the unusual intervention as a sign that their careers now have a ceiling and worry for the future generation of female military leaders.
Should really investigate ways to remove bacteria from milk and other foods. Perhaps warming it to a temperature that kills the bacteria but doesn’t cook the food.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare says they didn't name two dairies potentially linked to the outbreak “because this is a potential risk for any raw milk producer.”
Never thought for the life of me I’d ever root for the Knicks, but here we are.
Meanwhile I’m trying to chart a course to retire as early as possible (partly motivated by the state of public funding for science) so I can avoid AI and pretending it’s some miracle technology. In a decade the erosion of critical thinking and human creation due to AI is going to be palpable.

The fact that there are academics arguing this (holding people accountable for all content in a publication you signed onto) is unfair or too hard is mind-boggling.
Dr. Holly Walters@manigarm.bsky.social · 3mo agoI'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
I expect relying on people to ground and proofread AI to be as immensely successful as policies inspired by “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” People are the problem. People will continue to be the problem. Policies need to account for actual human behavior and not some ideal.

Maybe the “AI revolution “ is like COBOL at the turn of the millennium. I should just bide my time until I can charge ridiculous consulting rates to clean up the mess.
