It's extremely revealing that one of Harper's main takeaways from the tenure track as a Black professor was to become singularly suspicious of his Black colleagues' qualifications (and his own) rather than, say, at all interested in the existence of racism and white/male mediocrity within academia.

Even this write up on IC succcess rates lays the groundwork by implying the topic preference thing is the most important driver of the Ginther gap. When it only accounted for ~20% of the effect. And downplayed the bias remained across the topic-success quintiles.

What I am most proactively angry about is that even if there is an after times, those who have been most injured / affected will be told to get to the back of the line and be happy with relative crumbs. While the “more important” things are fixed first.

My point is this. We haven’t seen numbers since Hoppe. So we can assume nothing has changed from the 10.7% success for Black PI apps vs 17.7% for white PI apps. Does that mean we’re at 1% success rate for apps with Black PIs vs 13% for those with white PIs?

I sometimes think about the gender disparities that became apparent among academics amid the COVID Public Health Emergency. Men who weren't caregiving / had lower advising, teaching, and service loads were able to "focus" on research, while women were more likely to see slowed research productivity
