Oh it's gonna be a VERY wild @genrevision.com versus episode this week. COOL WORLD vs. MONKEYBONE will have champions in both corners. Look what I did to @travisnewton.bsky.social by making him watch this infamous Brendan Fraser flop. Who will be the winner? Tune in Sunday to find out!

Travis Newton's Letterboxd review of MONKEYBONE (2001)

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🧡

I've never heard anything good about this, but I'm so delighted to have finally seen Monkeybone! It's funny, gorgeous, and inventive. It's also easy to see how anyone might have found it abrasive, but I was genuinely charmed.

*sigh* I didn't want to be the guy who likes COOL WORLD, but I guess I'm the guy who likes COOL WORLD, even though it fails at nearly all its creative goals. Yes, you're right to think that there is something wrong with me. It's gonna be a wild @genrevision.com versus episode this week.

My Letterboxd review of COOL WORLD (1992)

🧡

Even though it's busted on nearly every level — the hack rewritten script, obvious production quality issues and variations in the animation, editing rhythms, a pop-industrial club soundtrack that evokes sentient junkyard cars shoving neon tubes up each others' tailpipes, the performances that aren't Kim Basinger and voice acting legend Charlie Adler — Cool World manages that rare status of a failure that leaves me in genuine awe. It's so massive a money burn that I can't help but huff the toxic fumes and get fatally high, giggling at the many colors in the rising smoke.

If there was ever a night to watch AEW for the first time, it's tonight. Last year's Grand Slam Mexico is my favorite wrestling show ever. Arena México has the most passionate crowd on the planet. This will be an absolute joy.

I had to be made aware of this when I saw THE ODYSSEY. The trailer had me wanting to leave the theater. A truly repugnant attempt at high-concept romance. Audiences deserve far better.

"If this is what it takes to get a rom-com greenlit these days, maybe we should just let them die. Death with dignity is surely a better fate for the genre than fascist capitulation." @oldfilmsflicker.bsky.social from her zero star review of ONE NIGHT ONLY:

Another potential main character for The Making of JAWS: Joe Alves. It's his first film as production designer. A huge endeavor. He brings veteran Bob Mattey in to help make the shark work. Make it a "passing the torch" film about how youth endeavors to create something never seen before.

Drew Dietsch@drewdietsch.bsky.social · yesterday

Realistically, I think the only JAWS film worth making at this point is a fictionalized riff on the production of the first film. Pick who you want for your perspective character (Spielberg, Carl Gottlieb, a made-up Martha's Vineyard resident) and make it a madcap misadventure in moviemaking.
