Oh it's gonna be a VERY wild @genrevision.com versus episode this week. COOL WORLD vs. MONKEYBONE will have champions in both corners. Look what I did to @travisnewton.bsky.social by making him watch this infamous Brendan Fraser flop. Who will be the winner? Tune in Sunday to find out!

Travis Newton's Letterboxd review of MONKEYBONE (2001)

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🧡

I've never heard anything good about this, but I'm so delighted to have finally seen Monkeybone! It's funny, gorgeous, and inventive. It's also easy to see how anyone might have found it abrasive, but I was genuinely charmed.

*sigh* I didn't want to be the guy who likes COOL WORLD, but I guess I'm the guy who likes COOL WORLD, even though it fails at nearly all its creative goals. Yes, you're right to think that there is something wrong with me. It's gonna be a wild @genrevision.com versus episode this week.

My Letterboxd review of COOL WORLD (1992)

🧡

Even though it's busted on nearly every level — the hack rewritten script, obvious production quality issues and variations in the animation, editing rhythms, a pop-industrial club soundtrack that evokes sentient junkyard cars shoving neon tubes up each others' tailpipes, the performances that aren't Kim Basinger and voice acting legend Charlie Adler — Cool World manages that rare status of a failure that leaves me in genuine awe. It's so massive a money burn that I can't help but huff the toxic fumes and get fatally high, giggling at the many colors in the rising smoke.

Just finished our last screening for Number Twos Month at @genrevision.com. Anyone out there have INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM as their favorite in the franchise? It's not mine but I'm more than willing to hear those arguments. It's such a barrel of fun and easily my #2 in the series.

My Letterboxd review of INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984)

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 🧡

The pure pulp of Indiana Jones' entire premise is allowed to run wild and free in this simpler, sillier, and self-indulgent sequel. That's a double-edged sword but one that never fails to cut through its target.

Already did this for JAWS, but for something less popular, MIAMI BLUES wipes the floor with the junky novel It's based on. Seriously, give it a watch and tell me you aren't mesmerized by the warped American fantasy of Junior. Loved doing this for @genrevision.com. genrevision.com/posts/miami-...

What are your favorite adaptations that transcend their source material? Blade Runner springs to mind

It’s true! THE PHANTOM holds up beautifully on Kino Lorber’s recent UHD release. Helps that the movie is a total blast, of course. Here’s our review! genrevision.com/posts/phanto...

MJ's @drhbus.bsky.social writes that the new 4K release from @kinolorber.com "restores 'The Phantom' to a visual and audio quality that it has been impossible to find for decades." Read his thoughts in the latest #DiscDispatch
