Immunology Prof @ UW (Seattle). Cell death and inflammation in brains, lungs and tumors. I’d rather be outside, probably on a bike.
STUDY: Children are 8 times more likely to be killed in crashes involving SUVs/pick-ups than regular cars. Altogether, SUVs/pickups account for 38% of pedestrian and cyclist fatalities. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Hey I know some of those experts! Sen. Patty Murray @murray.senate.gov visited our dept. today to talk with @marionpepper.bsky.social about the importance of immunology and vaccine research. We are lucky to have these leaders advocating for us in uncertain times! #immunosky #immunology
A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic. www.jstor.org/stable/24923...
Im sure the new potential head of HHS, who has long been an avowed opponent of vaccines and proponent of raw milk, is carefully looking at the science and reconsidering his views since avian influenza spreading among dairy cows throughout the US just as annual flu season is about to start. Right??

All milk sampling to date routinely shows 7+ logs of infectious virus per mL in samples from infected cows. Very glad this raw milk was recalled because I cannot emphasize enough what a bad idea it is for people to drink high titer H5N1.
Hat tip to my brother Lincoln for snagging the username Big—L on here. He’s a tall strapping lad whose name starts with an L, so solid choice. But more importantly this makes his handle @big--l.bsky.social which is an excellent tribute to The Dude! Strong work!

Talked my amazing wife into joining by pointing out all the @edyong209.bsky.social bird chat she was missing. Follow her! She studies poop!
Hello, #ScienceBluesky! Stoked to start sharing cool science again! Here is a pic I took of the aurora in Washington October 10th. An amazing amount of science goes into predicting when it’s worth driving 2.5 hours to clear skies! Truly a wonder of the natural world!
I go around saying that tissue repair and tumorigenesis are two faces of the same coin. @ejvillablanca.bsky.social &co now show that this is not always the case and the two processes can be "unlinked" in the gut! @natureportfolio.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Liver X receptor unlinks intestinal regeneration and tumorigenesis - Nature
Liver X receptor drives epithelial Areg-mediated intestinal regeneration, while preventing tumour growth through adaptive immune responses.

👋 fellow immunologists, it’s a pleasure to be with you all on bsky! I work on type I #interferons, I figured it would be neat to have a starter pack for those of us working on all things IFN! I’ll keep adding to it, let me know if you want to be included! #immunology #immunosky go.bsky.app/71vKZJA
Our 1st paper post (skeet?) on 🦋: So excited and thankful to have this out! www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1.... This study was spearheaded by a fantastic former postdoc - James Grayczyk w/ much help from the talented Luying Liu who helped get it through the revision process and over the finish line

I feel this as both a reviewer (many more requests) and author (long review times, reviewers ghosting after agreeing to review).
The strain on scientific publishing: we set out to characterise the remarkable growth of the scientific literature in the last few years, in spite of declining growth in total scientists. What is going on? direct.mit.edu/qss/article/... A 🧵 1/n #AcademicSky #PhDchat #ScientificPublishing #SciPub

I’ll be there @midwinter-immun.bsky.social This is always such a great general immunology meeting, consider signing up. Early bird deadline extended till Friday!
Early bird registration for Midwinter Conference of Immunologists extended until 11/22. Best immunology conference of the year! New website here: web.cvent.com/event/793d94... Abstract deadline remains 12/13
I made a starter pack for those of us interested in or working on T cells. Let me know if you would like to be added or know somebody that should be added. Looking forward to scientific discussions and updates on our favorite immune cell type!
OK, #immunology Bluesky LFG! If, like me, you're trying to reconstruct the vibrant scientific network we had at the other place, these starter packs are a great start: go.bsky.app/2bqX3T7 go.bsky.app/PY5tCas go.bsky.app/FmERUoD go.bsky.app/AjNpW2h go.bsky.app/SinqoJU go.bsky.app/DmphBCT
