"It's clear that there's a rampant dumbing down in progress in which not knowing things is considered a virtue. I don't throw my hands up in despair, but I do try to indicate that it's a very serious problem." - Carl Sagan

US COVlD Update, PMC, July 27, 2026 ▪️10 hot spots (see Alt text) ▪️Persistent high/very high levels in TX ▪️FL, AK, HI, & the continental northwest picking up ▪️1 in 198 people estimated actively infectious nationally ▪️1.57 million estimated weekly infections & rising (1/2)

The US has 10 hot spots. There are major outbreaks across much of Texas (high/very high). Houston, denoted by the light blue county in the southeast (Harris) has 1-3-week reporting lags at most sites so may be worse than noted. Hardin county, two counties over to the east/northeast, continues to experience BA.1 Omicron-level transmission. The Texas surge is bleeding into estimates for western Louisiana.
There are 9 other outbreaks: southeast Alaska (Juneau, high), Hawai’i (Honolulu and Kauai, high), north central Oregon through the Washington coast (high), western Nevada (Carson City, high), the Utah-Idaho border region (very high), southwestern Colorado (high/very high), southern Florida (high/v high), Atlantic City, New Jersey (high), and Grafton County, New Hampshire (high). The outbreaks in the Bay Area and Guam declined since last week. Note that the CDC state-level map shows no state median in the high/very high range, which is atypical. Higher levels tend to be more widespread.

We made an investment in a room air purifier. I prioritized Clean Air Replacement Rate, ability to filter out particulates like those in wildfire smoke, quiet running fans, and simplicity. This will complement our DIY Corsi-Rosenthal box. Thought some of you might be interested. AirFanta 3Pro:

It is not easy being COVID cautious. It's crap not joining in social events. It isn't enjoyable being the only person masking. It is tough keeping quiet when being patronised by people with zero knowledge. It is all EXHAUSTING. Solidarity to everyone prepared to listen to science & put others first

American buffalo (Bison bison) once ranged from northern Mexico to Georgia to ... well, Buffalo, NY, which is one theory of how it got its name. They were a keystone species in so many areas, aerating soil, recycling nutrients... the landscape was changed by their sudden absence.

I visited my local bison herd this morning. It is good to remind ourselves that bison are not strictly western animals. They were the dominant herbivore of the Bluegrass and created our woodland pasture ecosystem. More at Our Trees.
