I had a funny memory of my mom this morning. I was in college, and we were listening to the radio. Alanis Morissette’s “you oughta know“ came on. Mom listened for a minute. Then she looked at me and said, “boy, talk about sour grapes.“

I’m watching the Counting Crows documentary. Their first 2 records were big for me. The doc is good! But this skeet is not about the Crows. It’s about the fact that every time Cyndi Lauper comes on, I love her more.

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.

Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use

My books have only sold several thousand copies. My novel may only sell in the hundreds. However, I can promise every word is 100% my own work. I sweat over every syllable. A Nobel laureate complaining about the economics of writing and resorting to AI slop is embarrassing.

With disgust I learned Olga Tokarczuk uses AI to help with writing her latest novel - article in Polish, my translation of relevant bit in posts below mycompanypolska.pl/artykul/olga...

In order of importance Brother Robert by Annye Anderson, Johnson's stepsister, as she's the only one who actually knew him. Then Escaping the Delta by Elijah Wald for musical context and Up Jumped The Devil by Bruce Conforth and Gayle Dean Wardlow for the most readable biography.
