🪙THE GOLDEN PAVILION🔥 True beauty is something that attacks, overpowers, robs, and finally destroys. -Mishima Yukio (三島由紀夫). In 1950, almost bald of gold, and having survived the Ōnin War, Kinkaku-ji was burnt to the ground by Hayashi Yōken, one of its own novice monks.

Adding the finishing touches 🖌️ The image in this ancient #Greek cup depicts a helmet-maker concentrating on adding the final touches to a Corinthian helmet. 📷️ Attic red-figure pottery stemmed cup depicting a scene of daily life, The Antiphon Painter, 490–480 BCE. AN1896-1908.G.267

The cup with its scene of ancient daily life had already been broken and repaired in antiquity before it was placed into a tomb, possibly of a helmet-maker. It was found only in fragments sometime in the 19th century and subsequently heavily restored by adding missing parts of the vessel and reconstructing their decoration, including the entire central part of the image and parts of its surrounding decorative frame. The brighter orange areas are original.

Escomb's St John the Evangelist (Co. Durham) is one of Britain's most complete Anglo-Saxon churches - built c.7th–8th century largely from reused Roman stone, with original windows, doorways and chancel arch still intact. Saved from demolition in the 1870s. A genuine time capsule.
