This is an excellent primer on the brutal history of post-13th amendment prison labor. As the need for workers to do backbreaking work continues to increase, this is only going to get worse. You better believe this is part of why the administration keeps boasting about new prison construction.

tl,dr; Scientists no longer allowed to use federal funding to publish, attend meetings, or talk to the public. They cannot collaborate internationally. Grants can be cancelled for any reason, at any time, political appointees have a final say over what gets funded, and who gets funded.
