Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

Ecologist, mom, wife, possessed of a greyhound, accidental gardener, puns are my jam.
I am slowly adding darning to my mending skills. My darns are still large and lumpy, but this was a favorite sweatshirt (had it for thirty years now!) and when the cuff started fraying I figured I had nothing to lose.
This weekend's garden and orchard haul. Not all of it, either. Featured: French prune plums (most of which have been dried into plums by now), sungold and sweet hundred cherry tomatoes, Early Girl/Dirty Girl tomatoes, a few Cherokee Purple tomatoes, and a bunch of Aunt Mollie's ground cherries.

Happy #FossilFriday from the special surprise found inside the last stupid Xiphactinus that i discovered this spring: a complete Micropycnodon! This poor little guy was eaten right before the Xiphactinus (nicknamed Brown Sugar) died, and is forever trapped in fish rib jail. 🧪🐟
The Danube's low enough people are finding mammoth bones in it.
Des os de mammouth découverts en Bulgarie dans le lit du Danube, dont le niveau est exceptionnellement bas à cause de la sécheresse
Today's spider: a fine jumping spider with a gorgeous red abdomen.
Today's garden haul: sungold and sweet 100 cherry tomatoes, ground cherries. Not shown: zucchini and okra.

It's berry season and you have the tiniest friends. These critically endangered babies are Egyptian tortoises that hatched on July 4 and 6, 2026. Currently, our Egyptian tortoises are living behind the scenes in a warm and cozy habitat with lots of attention from their dedicated animal keepers.

I always want to know about supply chains, particularly magic. (I have a story about the woman who makes magic mirrors in her workshop!) Who grinds the truth powder? Who spends FOREVER milking the unicorn? Who breeds the immediately-available flesh-eating scarabs for the live burial ritual?
You know, fantasy novels glorify the shiny jobs: the captains of the guard, the renowned blacksmiths, the solemn clergy. But what job do you think deserves its own take from the perspective of a main character?
Today is a good day to (re-)read Lincoln's Gettysburg address. Go on. It isn't that long.
Today was Baby Bird Leave Nest Day, apparently. Three separate instances of baby birds with wing feathers, hopping around on the ground. The last one was a baby kinglet, parent nearby, that the dipshit dog decided to grab. Hoping it's okay. I left it sheltered under a rosebush the parent was in.
in tagalog, instead of saying “whatever happens happens” we say “bahala na si batman” which loosely translates to “let batman handle it” and i think that’s beautiful
This picture of a juvenile secretary bird appeared on my tumblr feed the other day and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. the legs, the hairdo, the expression?? what am I supposed to do with this information
I’m just gonna note that the current head of public health policy in the US government has decided this technology should not be researched anymore.
GOOD NEWS! A personalized mRNA vaccine, known as mRNA-4157, has shown promise in keeping melanoma, a deadly skin cancer, from returning. FIVE years later, NEARLY 70% of people in the vaccine group are CANCER-FREE. The vaccine also cut a person’s risk of the cancer metastasizing by NEARLY 60%.
