I'm sure this warning will bring out the fossil fuel stans, but I checked my solar generation for yesterday and it produced over a third of what I used even in the dreary winter weather we had, rolling out more solar remains a solution for future energy needs Crossposted with @openvibe.social

Screenshot of an RNZ social media post reporting a power warning. The headline reads: “Transpower says an hour-long national energy shortfall has been identified for Friday morning” followed by a snowflake and electric plug emoji. Below is a stylised illustration of two electrical outlets set against a pink and purple grid background. The image includes the text: “Business — Temperatures plummet: Transpower issues power warning.” . Screenshot of an energy monitoring dashboard showing solar generation and household electricity usage. The top panel, labelled “Solar Generation,” reports a total of 12.9 kWh generated, with 9.2 kWh consumed on-site and 3.7 kWh exported to the grid. A large yellow 71 on the right indicates 71% self-consumption. The lower panel, labelled “Energy Usage,” shows total electricity use of 30.8 kWh, with 9.2 kWh supplied by solar and 21.6 kWh imported from the grid. A large blue 30% on the right indicates that 30% of the household's energy use came from solar.

In times like these, it’s important to pay attention to the grand unifying narratives ideas are hooking on to. Like that children are there to be controlled by adults, like babies and birth are commodities to be controlled by the state, like citizenship is a state more valuable than non-citizenship.

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.

It is amazing that the Prime Minister is a walking political disaster, and the Foreign Minister is an out-and-proud racist, AND YET they're still going to win the election because Labour is coded "losers" and the Greens are coded "innumerate woke shoplifters". Opposition can't get any traction.

Luxon's "I was out there building a kick-arse business" just galls me so much. Bro you were employed by a couple of gigantic inefficient enterprises. You did not build a pie shop or a landscaping business. You did not build a tech startup.
