I did the trendy thing. I wasn't going to include two things of the same franchise, but I made and exception for Pokémon since those two games both mean a lot to me (though neither is my favorite) and represent different steps on my gaming journey! More details in the alt text!

A matrix of 9 games that I feel really define my gaming experience.

Pokemon Blue was the first video game I ever owned and turned me into a lifelong Pokémon fan. Bulbasaur forever!

Majora's Mask was one of the first console games I ever played and opened my eyes to both games with a lot of narrative power, but also games that aren't afraid to be a little weird. As an adult, its message of carrying hope in the face of certain doom also resonates with me. Anju and Kafei is the best side quest in any video game ever

Mother 3 is the only game that's ever made me cry. One of the best narratives ever crafted for a video game. It's got the right mix of humor and drama for me! It's also a little off-kilter

Radiant Dawn was my first FE experience, weirdly, and it made me a big fan of the franchise. I love the idea of seeing wars from different perspectives and as an examination of the aftermath of a typical hero's journey seen in PoR

Emerald is the game I've put the most amount of hours in a single save and gen 3 a a whole was the first game I ever followed the marketing hype for

Each version of Persona 3 is special so this could be any of them. This was my first introduction to "hardcore" JRPGs and got me hooked on them after!

Civ 4 was college for me. We'd start games at 10 pm just for the hell of it and regret it later. Probably the game I've dumped the most hours into ever.

Etrian Odyssey Nexus (could also be 3) is one of my comfort games. The map making is such a cool thing that I made a whole DND campaign inspired by the idea.

Phoenix Wright is another one of those comfort games and in general my intro to visual novels, and while they're not my favorite genre, I still come back to my gay lawyers. Also had one of my first video game crushes (Gumshoe)

CELEBRATION! To commemorate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Ace Attorney series on October 12, we're sharing a brand-new illustration by series artists Kazuya Nuri and Takuro Fuse, featuring several fan favorite characters dressed to impress for the occasion!
