Solidarity with Indian youth & students protesting despite brutal repression! Here’s a statement from the Democratic Teachers’ Initiative in support of the protest against the government’s ‘diversionary weaponizing of religion & nationalism & its criminal disregard for the futures of the youth’

"We will take, we will occupy. We have to learn not to tip toe through a space which ought by right to belong to everyone"
picture of street protests in DelhiStatement
The march to Parliament on 20th July saw a historic turnout, with lakhs of young people coming out on the streets and sending a clear message to the NDA government. People travelled from across the country to reject the BJP-RSS combine's diversionary weaponizing of religion and nationalism, and its criminal disregard for the futures of the young. Not surprisingly, the Delhi Police and riot personnel - under orders from the Home Ministry - responded with brutal violence, teargassing and lath-charging the peacefully protesting masses. Many students and innocent citizens have been grievously injured, left bleeding and waiting for hours before they could be taken to hospitals for treatment.
The current upsurge, as we all understand, is not just about NTA's repeated paper leaks or the colossal mismanagement of India's education sector under Dharmendra Pradhan. Instead, it is an expression of the utter frustration and angst of India's Gen Z - about an economy which neither guarantees jobs proportionate to their qualifications nor the basic dignity of rights-bearing citizens.
Our Gen Z is either parked in courses under the NEP 2020 which do not add up to skills required for dignified employment, or they are fighting for minimum wages in the industrial sector from Noida to Panipat. As a permanently swelling informal workforce, labouring under extractive contracts on delivery-on-demand mobile apps or continuing to be stripped of the most basic worker rights under the newly notified Labour Codes, Indian Gen Z has had enough. And over the past month, they have come out of their homes and factories and colleges and universities to say exactly this.
Given the convergence of struggles over education and employment, DTI holds that the current movement's primary demand for the resignation of India's Education Minister is only the first step towards a complete structural overhaul. In this regard, the disbanding of National Testing Agency (NTA) and repeal of the National Ed…

Must read NLR interview of @triofrancos.bsky.social Why did Biden's green capitalism not stick? What kind of world building projects should the left seek power to do? Or should it just fight against data centres? What opportunities open up -in North & South- with China's green industrial policies?

These cowards are so scared of Blackrock investors leaving Berlin that they will BAN any possible federal implementation of a constitutional article for socialization of housing, even when passed by popular referendum. Welcome to the capitalist state. www.tagesspiegel.de/politik/wir-...

I spoke to @poltheoryother.bsky.social last week for some reflections on heatwaves, ocean currents, a dose of geoengineering and the state of climate politics. Give it a listen! (then don't tell me if you do because I'm always too scared to listen back) podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/h...

This is an important new paper. When we allocate responsibility for emissions, it's normally in terms of consumption. We tally up direct household emissions (eg, from household energy use) plus the emissions embodied in all the stuff that a household consumes.
