Associate Professor in Early Modern Performance at University of Bristol: early modern bodies, PaR, gender. Formerly thinking about hair, now thinking about walking: also defining 'the Predramatic'. Teacher, cat-lover, writer, and mum, in varying measures.

I never quite understand it, especially as a historian, when scholarship is denigrated as "old". Yes, there might be problematic value systems in play, but there might not. And an insight is an insight, no matter when it was made.

Will be on this radio show this morning talking about my work, if you fancy finding out more about women, walking, night-walking, public health, education, sustainability.... I hope to cover it all! One Love One Planet - BCfm Radio share.google/9mZSxIrctAPh...

One Love One Planet

One Love One Planet is BCfm's environmental show, but it's about so much more than global warming and all things eco; it's also about feeling connected to our amazing planet!

The news of brutal cuts to the Arts and Humanities at Exeter and elsewhere highlights the self-destructive nature of the ´strategies’ being pursued across UK HE. Exeter’s English Dept was rated the best research unit in English in the country in RAE 2008. 1/4

Fuming that I've been doing work on women and walking for several years now, and the women of colour I collaborate with are repeatedly telling me that their freedom & perceptions of safety are being affected by the 'Raise the Flag' movement. How dare you make people feel afraid to get from A to B.

Academic research means reading 1 article, which leads you to a book and 6 other articles, which lead you to 17 articles and 4 book chapters, and oops now you’re an expert in the 1990s feminist criticism of Taylorist management philosophy, a thing you didn’t know existed until 3 days ago.

Further thoughts on 2 Angry Women of Abingdon - there is a v queer layer beneath the veneer of affluent heteronormativity. Frank and Philip are far more interested in each other than in marriage and the kiss between the wives could be presented very interestingly. I really want to direct this play!

This is what it's like to put your professional ideas out there. Published a not terribly controversial article yesterday in mainstream press - awake today to find it dismissed by keyboard warriors as 'woke trash', 'nonsense', 'pseud's corner' & 'you cannot be serious' that I'm a professor. Morning!
