This sort of thing infuriates me because it's simply a lie - representing one cooky course at one famously non-traditional SLAC as typical! - and Rich Lowry (the author) knows it is a lie he is cravenly telling for political advantage. If your ideas are good, you don't need to lie.

They also have a farcical idea of history education. I bet there aren’t more than a handful of profs in the whole country who still use Zinn as a primary text. They are more likely to use him to illustrate changing historiographical interpretations and the intersection of politics and history.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

For the first time in over 30 years, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Northern cod stock has been deemed “healthy” by Ottawa. www.canadianaffairs.news/2026/09/05/i...

The number of cases of cervical cancer reported in Scotland among women given the HPV vaccine at 12-13 years of age is now zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. Zero. www.bbc.com/news/article...

No cervical cancer cases in fully HPV-vaccinated women in Scotland

A study published by Public Health Scotland finds that the HPV vaccine is "highly effective".

The chant you're hearing is "FIRST! DO NO HARM!" Huge high five to everyone who came out to the protest at Mount Sinai over the hospital's deal with Trump to end gender-affirming care for trans youth. 🧵 of photos to follow!

Rise and Resist@riseandresist.bsky.social · 5d ago

Mt Sinai has violated the Hippocratic Oath and sacrificed the health of Trans and Gender Nonconforming youth by capitulating to the Trump admin. A coalition of TGNCNB and LGBTQIA+ activists, and allies will stand up for our youth against @mountsinainyc.bsky.social . JOIN US!

Before I was a politician, I was a proud union member. I’m honored to stand with my union brothers and sisters on Labor Day and every day. In the Senate, I’ll fight to raise pay, lower costs, and empower Texas workers.

Honestly, the biggest surprise to me is that I rather assumed once one fascist ran a country into a ditch - as Putin has done, as Trump is doing - the rest of the developed world would see that and recoil, but it turns out every country is thinking, 'maybe our fascists are just Built Different.'

May I politely suggest that the correct response to people voting for fascists is not, "how can we feel their pain and listen?" but "what the hell is wrong with these arrogant fools?" The latter is still a quest for understanding, but in the correct frame, I think.

I see the "no we really need to listen to AfD voters and feel their pain for real this time" is in full swing in the German commentariat

If you have a problem with Mayor Mamdani attending the 9/11 ceremony you’re simply a racist piece of shit, I’m sorry, that’s on you, you’re gonna have to live with that until you figure out how to be a better human being

Anjali Dayal@anjalikdayal.bsky.social · 2d ago

This is somehow still going, and it’s not just a few random families now; it’s also a former mayor of NYC and governor of New York. There is, again, no way to reason to argue Mamdani shouldn’t attend this commemoration that isn’t fundamentally bigoted

Xavier Becerra has a message for naturalized American citizens: YOU ARE NOT A SECOND-CLASS CITIZEN. VOTE. “What the Trump administration is telling us, is that they believe that they can intimidate U.S. citizen voters.”

Realizing the extent to which this is true wildly changed my opinions about how to deal with Trumpism, since they're never going to be satisfied unless they're actively dominating everyone else. You can't give them some concessions and go back to the status quo: they're reactionary revolutionaries.

Better Things Are Possible@internethippo.bsky.social · 2d ago

Antebellum politics is fascinating, the South kept getting policy concessions and whipped themselves up into a paranoid rage anyway, essentially because they couldn't stand being culturally judged for having slaves

Rejoice with me, Internet! With the ID of Ord’s Kangaroo Rat, we have hit 200 species ID’d in the yard! 63 plants, 52 birds, 7 mammals and 68 insects. (Some are only to the genus level, mind you.)

MAHA has been in power for two years. They have decimated basic science, gutted food safety surveillance and kicked millions of people off food stamps. *That* is their ideology, not their polite platitudes about corporate control of the food supply.

the whole idea behind MAHA and the griftosphere more generally is that there is One Neat Trick and that is why they fundamentally do not and can never have a point even if there are small benefits to some particular thing there is no One Neat Trick and never will be

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social · 2d ago

Second, MAHA isn’t all that concerned with treatment of disease anyway. Its core claim is that nearly all diseases can be prevented through virtuous lifestyles. If we were all drinking raw milk and taking zinc supplements, we wouldn’t be coming down with heart disease and depression and COVID.

Also, do you notice how whenever the subject of violence against queer people in predominantly Muslim countries is brought up, it's never acknowledged that the victims of that violence are most likely also Muslim? It's an intentionally deceptive rhetorical framing.

Hurricane Lowell remains right of track of the latest NHC forecast — even following adjustments of the forecast track to the east with each update. Landfall in Hawaii is *not* expected, but these trends have prompted a hurricane warning in western Hawaii for significant impacts.

If it seems like the NHC forecast for Hurricane Lowell shifted closer to Hawaii, you're not imagining things - there has been a clear eastward shift over the last 2 days. Perhaps more concerningly, the NHC forecast is actually *west* of all models, which continue trending east.

You can’t write about every other country’s far right party like this, & then continue to not call the Republican Party a far right party & write about them as if they’re the 🇩🇪 Christian Democrats or 🇬🇧 Tories. It’s both factually wrong & bad journalism. And yet, it keeps happening every day.

A microcosm of my frustration with 🇺🇸 political media for years now. The AfD in 🇩🇪 is, if anything, <less> far right & authoritarian than the GOP, but neither @nytimes.com nor any other major media outlet regularly calls them a far right party. But as soon as it’s 🇩🇪, right in the headline. Every time.
