PSA for any PhDs required to submit their dissertation to ProQuest: The only way to stop them from adding your work to Turnitin and iThenticate is to opt out of making your work “discoverable through Google Scholar and other major search engines.” It doesn’t actually say Turnitin anywhere 🤷‍♀️

Thankfully Turnitin's planned change in terms to use all student content for AI development has been forced back. But the big Q remaining is: How did getting a degree from universities worldwide become conditional on students agreeing to the end user licence agreement of an *edtech company*?

Example: Four agents infiltrated a "Workers Assembly to Defeat ICE" and strike planning meeting on Feb. 15 at the United Labor Center. That report includes this sentence: "Attendees appeared to have a negative opinion of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey." (8)

i feel like this post and the hed really miss the most important part of this which is that the United States Federal Government convened a grand jury and presented a complete hoax to them, complete with graphic illustrating a wide-ranging conspiracy involving every liberal organization.

Homeland Security investigators conducted a wide-ranging surveillance campaign against Minnesota labor unions, trying to find evidence that they were part of an Antifa conspiracy to finance domestic terrorism.

"Other members of the alleged conspiracy were said to include the local chapters of the S.E.I.U. and the Democratic Socialists of America, a state teachers’ union — and even the Grease Pit, a small bike shop in Minneapolis." www.nytimes.com/2026/08/13/u...

The government conducted expansive surveillance, infiltrated group chats and obtained financial records of organizations never accused of crimes.

Oh damn it is way worse. Turnitin was trying to make instructors *personally liable* for mistakes made by its faulty AI detector. The entire FAQ is eye-popping. If you're a journalist, download a copy and consider writing about academic surveillance software.. view-su2.highspot.com/viewer/40018...

Screenshot of Turnitin guidance titled “Q23: Am I personally liable for decisions based on a Service Report?” It states that Turnitin disclaims liability for decisions made in reliance on Service Reports and that instructors are “solely and independently responsible” for decisions about students, including placement, performance, academic misconduct, or Service Report contents. Turnitin logo appears at bottom right.

Anyone have a copy of Turnitin's proposed EULA changes that reportedly allowed them to train AI models on student data?

A few months ago, my suburban Hennepin Co caucus room was nearly standing room only, filled with first time attendees, nearly chanting “abolish ICE, ban data centers, and vote Peggy!” Glad to see we still have our winter rage!

this has happened with a few of my kid’s classes and she is so happy. i am so happy. fuck canvas and google classroom and all this tech that changes every year. textbooks, workbooks, and paper should be standard, not just because of AI and cheating but because the rest of their life is on screens.

Went to parent-teacher night at my kid's middle school this evening and got told that the district is now moving away from technology in the classroom and going back to pen and paper. I love that this excellent news of rebellion came on the same day as Zuckerberg's AI supremacist screed.

New from 404 Media: ICE to spend millions to buy data from LexisNexis to then feed into a Palantir system. ICE has long bought data from LexisNexis, which feds use to map out a person's addresses, location, assets, etc. But now explicitly want to use with Palantir www.404media.co/ice-to-pay-l...

ICE to Pay LexisNexis Millions for Data to Feed to Palantir

LexisNexis sells a massive amount of data to law enforcement, including ICE. New records indicate ICE wants to feed that data into a Palantir system.

If you ask me, and in this case someone did, small c conservative lawyerly risk management, the kind of dominates General Council offices, is leading us right into authoritarian control. See the lawyer’s advice versus mine.

"I don't want my clients to become a test case" for the Trump administration's agenda to crack down on higher ed, Crosby Ferise said. If a president or college board asks whether they should answer McMahon's questions, "I will say, 'It's not a bad "I don't think colleges should ignore the questions.
But I do think that they should be forthright about them,
," he said. "They should say, 'We believe ... that this is an attempt to coerce us, to say that science funding, and other federal resources are contingent upon signing onto the ideological agenda of the administration and breaking the traditions of American higher education, not reinforcing them. And for those reasons, we are taking an informed risk to push back on this and say that this is unacceptable."

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
