The EHRC code of practice comes in today, bringing in to the UK the most draconian regime for single sex spaces targeting trans people for a liberal democracy in the industrialised, under what is our nominally left of centre governing party.

The total amount a UK political party can spend in a General election year across 650 candidates is half that - and this was a single candidate in a single primary.
No matter the margin the story is that Haley Stevens got $70M of support, more than $30M of it from a single organization, and still lost.
The Wehrmacht covered up the execution of Soviet prisoners of war who fell into “undesirable” groups that were targeted by the Gestapo (political commissars, Jews, etc.) by “releasing” them from captivity so that their deaths didn’t have to be reported by the Prisoner of War Administration.
HuffPost reports: ICE officials did not report the death of someone who had been detained at Delaney Hall immigration detention center last month because they had technically “released” him in the middle of a medical emergency, a U.S. congressman alleged Monday. www.huffpost.com/entry/delane...
And none of them more, of course, than the colonial troops, most of whom were immediately massacred by the Germans even after the armistice.
I will fight and die on the hill that no one fought braver and better in 1940 than the French army in June, knowing that their best troops had already been lost and the Germans would show them little mercy
This is profoundly upsetting
It's a Tiger, Jim, but not as we know it... A Sherman V done up in the colour scheme of Tank 813 '突擊' of the Sino-American 1st Provisional Tank Group, northern Burma, 1944/5. The green might be a bit too rich but thankfully there are no colour photos to correct me with!
Sorry but unless you, as a media outlet, have managed to get someone from the Navy (probably a former sailor because those currently serving maybe disbarred from commenting) to explain that this is extremely unlikely to happen for legal reasons, then, arguably, you haven't really done your job.
Politics latest: Reform wants to use Navy to stop small boats after Burnham vows to be 'relentless' in tackling crossings
Reform UK says a Nigel Farage-led government would send the Royal Navy into the Channel to intercept all migrant boats - and is accused by Labour of "reheating" old proposals. Follow the latest.

As a distraction from the dishonourable ex-member for Clacton, it seems someone's gone and uploaded 5-ish minutes of footage of the Sino-American 1st Provisional Tank Group in February 1945: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FLG...

The case of William O'Reilly, a Cambridge associate professor, who is white, is an interesting comparator. An investigation found that O'Reilly had plagiarised an undergrad's work, but decided this was just negligence, and he kept his job. This has attracted far less publicity than Prof Arday's case
Plagiarising professor stays in post and threatens student journalists
More than twelve pages of an article published under O’Reilly's name had been lifted almost word for word from two essays by one of his students

lmao this is a truly world class Take she isn’t even talking just video games here, this is a blanket ban on sports, board games, cards, darts, all of it
This may sound radical but "games are shit" is actually the median opinion of every Gamer.
I am never going to understand this way of thinking. Even if you don't care about Trump voters as people, 45% of the population here agrees with you politically. 60,000 people are displaced. At least 27,000 are probably on your side politically.
Leaving Patel clone Mahmood in post is a very disappointing early days error of Burnham's that he will live to regret.
This is disgusting Abolish the Home Office
Monique Hawkins, acting chief executive of the3million, said the impact of the Home Office’s retrospective review was devastating for many. "People applied to the EU settlement scheme in good faith...by building their lives in the UK and putting down roots." www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)
Apropos of a conversation last night that bled over into a couple of other statements, @fraserraeburn.bsky.social suggested that "The Second World War was primarily a battle between fascism and democracy. Discuss." would be a fascinating exam question, and I agree.
Some years ago I helped contribute the Cantonese namebase and coming back to it now it amazes me how much the project has expanded since then (I think when I last used it, climate had just been added).

Darkly amusing telegram here from the First Burma Campaign, in which Gen. Du Yuming (Deputy C-in-C of the 1st Route of the Chinese Expeditionary Force and CO of the Fifth Army) explains to Chiang Kai-shek that his superiors, Gen. Joseph Stilwell and Gen. Luo Zhuoying, have fled the battlefield.

Archive amusement of the day - family of Old Believers has left Russia for the Qing empire, supposedly because they think they'll be able to live in peace/practice freely there
The fact is there is a Józef Piłsudski for everyone. A revolutionary, an anti-imperialist, a military leader, a spy, a socialist, a conservative, a pragmatist, a bogeyman, a dictator, even a defeatist. And if it is not enough there is always his brother Bronisław researching Ainu culture.
X views are a total mirage. Whatever Musk reports is certainly a lie. They won't let anyone study the platform for a reason: It's entirely fake; it's a billion Russian bots pretending to be your girlfriend.
The audience for pro-Trump content has fallen from its heights and, for some creators, has reached new lows, a New York Times analysis suggests. Views are dropping for many of President Trump’s greatest allies. nyti.ms/3TLV4TV
I am shocked, shocked I tell you, that nobody seems to have mentioned that the kiss at 10:24 is William Shatner's first televised interracial kiss. Not to be confused with William Shatner's first interracial kiss on Star Trek, which was with BarBara Luna in 'Mirror, Mirror.'
“Elaan of Troyius” wasn’t the first time France Nuyen and William Shatner worked together. They were both on Broadway as leads in THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG. You can see them perform it on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW.
Somewhat tangential but for a good while that's been an issue for us at @askhistorians.bsky.social – not so much people actively trying to pass off LLM text as original, but trying to figure out if something was made by an LLM or if the person is just a very generic and formulaic writer.
I think people often think accounts online are bots when they're just human beings with so little ability to reason that they have reduced themselves to something indistinguishable from a machine.
Yes, plenty of humans out there failing the Turing test
