Formerly incarcerated people are now a protected class in Kansas City. Kansas City Council passed an ordinance today outlawing discrimination against people with criminal backgrounds in employment, housing, and business.

KC friends, is there any kind of YIMBY group or other organizing force working to increase housing here? Or is it all decentralized neighborhoods groups and individuals?

Just had to help a mom carry her double stroller through this snowbank so we could go out into the street to catch the bus. Another person had to help her older kid climb over a 3’ tall pile to catch a school bus. We have to do better.

Stopping to say hi to all the cats in windows is part of our kids’ daily routine on the walk to school.

Traffic has decreased. 273,000 fewer vehicles entered Manhattan below 60 Street from Monday to Friday last week.

TBF, I would say this council term followed by the last one are the most pedestrian friendly councils in recent KC history. Snow is tricky in this climate because we get just enough for it to be occasionally debilitating but not enough to have a true winter culture that manages the snow well.

In my mind, that says many good things about you and far fewer about them. We like to pretend KCMO desires density and pedestrian access and then do absolutely nothing for pedestrians during snowfall events. Either we are a pedestrian friendly city or we are not.

Perhaps another approach to this problem would be to add a new section to the code that says if you push snow onto the sidewalk from private property, you will be fined. As opposed to my resolution asking city manager to enforce the existing code that requires prop owners to clear sidewalks.

By riding a bike primarily for transportation, I know which houses in nearby neighborhoods have cats that like to lay in the windows, which yards have the most squirrels, and which people like to wave and say hello the most.

It seems like nitpicking, but when city-owned properties like City Market clear the path to the parking lot and leave the sidewalk connection that so many neighbors use to patronize it every day untouched, it sends a loud message about priorities.

I’m introducing a resolution today for same day adoption today calling on city manager to begin enforcement of Section 62-646 requiring property owners to clear their sidewalks. Resolution will also call for a plan to address this challenge better in the future.

Isn’t there something the city can do besides beg? Every winter we get proof that begging doesn’t help. Let’s start contracting out the clearing of these sidewalks after 24 hours, charged back to the business owners at a rate where we make some profit.

Folks, please, if you’re gonna clear your parking lot, for the love of god, clear the snow off your sidewalks too.

The surface lot on the SW corner of 18th and Oak seems to have purposely piled the snow on the two sidewalk segments on its north side. I promise you there are sidewalks under those mounds of snow. Car storage for comparison

Shout out to The Hub smoke shop. Literally the only business I passed on 18th that cleared their ADA ramp. Every other street it was climbing over knee-high snow banks. If you vape, give them business - 501 E 18th St

And parents: be kind to your co-workers as they are not the ones who ruined your furniture or drove nails into your hardwood floors last week. 🤷‍♂️

Hey friends, be patient with your coworkers who have school age kids. They’ve been yelling at their kids to stop hoverboarding in the house for three weeks straight. Yes her hoverboard has a speaker playing Pearl Jam.

Also, an act doesn’t have to be intentional, flagrant, or negligent to be violent. “There’s a high risk of violent storms in the forecast” for example. Calling traffic injuries and deaths “traffic violence” underscores the trauma inflicted by the systemic failures of our transportation system.

I have some thoughts on this, and on why I use traffic violence. First of all, the idea of drivers intentionally hurting people. It's true, most drivers don't intentionally use cars as weapons. But many do speed or text while driving, knowingly putting others in danger. Now, traffic violence.
