Of all the reasons people get sent to jail, forgetting an appointment has to be among the least justifiable. Yet, each year, 1 million jail bookings involve people facing failure to appear (FTA) charges. Shuffling people into the system for missing court does not keep us safe🧵

Pie chart showing that over 1 million jail bookings per year involve missed court dates. 488,000 are FTA with other charges. 546,000 are FTA charges only.

In the final stages of my book manuscript (!!) and seeking recommendations for a good academic copy-editor. I'd be very appreciative if folks pm'ed or emailed me (eeife@gmu.edu) recs. Thank you!

I really like how Zohran Mamdani has run a campaign that is so focused on making New York City a safe (including from the fascism of our current federal government) and affordable place for all its residents, and I am really appalled by how racist so much of the opposition to his candidacy has been.

Thinking about a doctoral degree? Join us this fall to hear why we are the #1 criminology program in VA and a Top 10 program in the nation! Learn more about George Mason's Top 10 doctoral program in criminology and submit your application by December 1.

I'm very proud of an article I recently had published in Social Problems (one of my faves!!) that explores how people charged with felonies are conditioned into the treatment they should expect upon adjudication. academic.oup.com/socpro/advan...

With talk of ICE doing"collateral arrests," I've been thinking of how this is also true for broader criminal justice. When a person is in jail/prison, on electronic monitoring/parole, family/friends/neighbors can also end up in more contact with police, increasing chances of surveillance & arrest.

I've been thinking a lot about uncertainty. Some studies show people experience more stress when there is an uncertain POSSIBILITY of pain, than when there is CERTAIN predictable pain. This week there were false alarms about ICE agents & anxiety was high. Maybe this is obvious, but.. (1/)
