#Horrorwriterschat Good question. My personal past never lands in my books. Ever. That being said: it's a well-known thing that I write a lot of horror in prison and secure psychiatric units because I've worked there as a teacher, and my degree is History and Psychology. Hence the hist-horror.
Making it personal. Q3: #HorrorWritersChat - In what ways has your own history (past) impacted or inspired your horror writing? Examples: giving a character your childhood trauma, reimagining an experience with a different ending.
#HorrorWritersChat Some, like Emily are all past, because she's a ghost origins story. Some have no past, like Rebecca, because she has no future. It'd be wasted on her. It varies. History can provide motivation, flaws, understanding. But sometimes I don't actually want you to sympathise with them.
Even fictional characters have a past. Q2: #HorrorWritersChat - How much history, how much of a past, do you give your horror characters? Share an example.
Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeetings! I be Eryn, one of the co-hosts for #HorrorWritersChat, and I write supernatural and psychological horror. I also sometimes add a historical element to my horror, so this should be fun! I'll have to get back to you with hist-horror names though as my brain is fried.
Welcome to Horror Writers Chat. It’s time to explore the past. Q1: #HorrorWritersChat - Introduce yourself, the horror you write, and share up to three historical horror fiction stories you’ve enjoyed. (Horror set in the past.)
I'm wrestling with demonic law. I need more tea. And a distraction. 1 like, 1 book question. Hit me with it. :D
1 like = 1 book question 📚💙
My arse is numb, I just drank cold tea because I forgot it was there, and my brain is fizzing gently into mush. But I solved my ecclesiastical knot and am at the final act which means everything is shelved now till I finish this fucker.
So if I said, semi-hypothetically, you know, that there might, is, an ARC coming with a gothic road trip, a demon lawyer and ecclesiastical fuckery, you would say.... It's got two books after this. FML.
55K and counting. This fucker is going to be such a fattie.
My thought process for the prompt (action) went - action, but not the action kind. An action gesture, but not the movie kind. And then it was waiting in the wings, behind the curtain, for a dream that never came. I don't make the rules!
Sliding in almost at the last gasps of the day, feet aching, hair frazzled, but writing. I couldn't pass up (the prompt) denouement. This one was written while Paper Aeroplanes, Billy Boyd, Alter Bridge and Birdy wove their magic.
I want to play too! I'm going to do a mega-thread of my friend's books here! Check their stuff out below and feel free to use #BeholdBooks to promote your own friend's stuff too!
I'm going to do a mega-thread of my friend's books here! Check their stuff out below and feel free to use #BeholdBooks to promote your own friend's stuff too! I will try to get to everyone I can, but I have a toddler so I may be a bit slow. 😅 🧵 #BeholdBooks #WriteSky #BookSky #WritingCommunity

The prompt was final. It took me a solid chunk of time to get The Final Countdown out of my head so I could think of a final prompt. Got one, eventually.
Just create, he says. Well, the prompt said. A muse is a dangerous thing sometimes. Do you think they'll let you sleep? Really?
Trying to get back on the VSS prompts. Life keeps getting in the way. How rude of it. Today was history. I went dystopian.
When life imitates art. I was on my round of bookshops opening who might stock an indie. Found a new romantasy one opening. All good and normal. Yes? Except it's set on the same ROAD as Black Cat Bookshop. If the woman calls herself Meredith I'm going to scream. 😂 I did submit. I am intrigued now :D
Technical, but not merely mechanical. A love story, but one with a predatory twist. Micro-prose this time.
Today’s prompt was float. Some things only become weightless when we stop trying to hold them.
Thanks for the weirdly relevant chat Eryn, given my current WIP and my first published book below. I recently republished it as a hard cover, so check it out — about an unprecedented flood that awakens a vengeful spirit in a rural town. #HorrorWritersChat www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-schoha...

It began raining on St Swithin's Day. By the 40th day, something had started knocking beneath the house. I’d lay face down on the cool tiles in the kitchen. One ear pressed to the floor to catch whispers of creaking bones and soaking rot. My body perfectly still, to feel it rapping against my heart.
#Horrorwriterschat Q3. You know I'm going to make you do microfiction. Well not make, per se. But make. You know. And as it's St. Swithin's Day today, let's not make things come true, eh? Or, you know. Do you. Use your discretion. Ahem.
#HorrorWritersChat First off, shoutout to @erynmccee.bsky.social for putting this together! Fun prompts this week! Second off, you can read my SW horror fanfic, “The Last Ship on Exegol,” here:

#HorrorWritersChat I am the Spooky Pickle. I dabble in many types of horror, honestly. I loathe overly hot days with lots of hot, persistent wind. I love thunderstorms and cool fall days the most.
Q1 #HorrorWritersChat. You know the drill. No links to your books till the promo at the end. Engage with each other, lets gets some horror talk flowing.
Sorry #horrorwriterschat, had to drive home. "Why don't you get that knocking of the dead fixed?" asked Pa. "It's raining right now," I replied. "Well, do it when it's not raining!" Pa said. "Why? The dead don't knock when it ain't raining!" I smiled. Someone should let Gram out of the basement.

Thanks so much Eryn! Love being here! #HorrorWritersChat My flash fiction A Good Day for Violence is out in Dark Descent magazine's anthology. @darkholmepub.bsky.social

Sorry for the short #horrorwriterschat answers - but it did make me think faster! My Kickstarter is funded, but I'm looking for as many readers as possible, even if it's just at the digital reward level! bsky.app/profile/oneg... Thanks!

#horrorwriterschat Again, I've just begun, but if it remains settled as it is in my mind as I write, it started with a serious squall. There is a low pressure system floating in... secrets will be in danger, some will die... But there will be dark storms... and storm chasers.

It began raining on St. Swithin’s Day. By the fourth day, something had started knocking beneath the house. On the fifth day, it told me things no one could possibly know about my life. The eighth day it told me I’d win lottery. And I did. On the twentieth day, I brought it my neighbour’s toddler.

Q4 #HorrorWritersChat In my two WIPs, I do mention the weather, how being in winter’s cold is better than in a haunted apartment, and another has a lot of outdoors and many terrains; weather will factor, but not in any man vs nature way, rather, people living in a living world…
