F*** all of the aye-eye and yes, I know the difference between generative and assistive. I also know that it's very simple to, hey--I don't care if you call me a dinosaur, but it's very simple to... not use it. Ever. AND call out why companies shoving it down everything make it so hard to opt out!

Youβre going to want to read the Women of the Weird West anthology, which features Indigenous authors (myself and Mathilda Zeller) and many other woc doing interesting things with the genre
I think the abandonment of indigenous elements in peoples weird west setting because they don't want to confront the uncomfortable specter of colonialism and the hollywood indian, let alone get in the way of their fun, is cowardice and contributes to the erasure that often defines indigenous racism.
Especially insulting in this season of wildfire where Indigenous communities are burning to the ground as a direct result of climate crisis.
Folks, listen to Indigenous people and elevate their views. Don't do what the person in the HWA newsletter did in their pro-AI post, talking *FOR* and *in place of* Indigenous people. As Tiffany rightfully says, "trivializing the activism by Indigenous people to protect our water"
So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while theyβre at it?
Wenddyyyy π Wendy is the best π€ I'm extremely fortunate to have worked with her and to have published a poem in Nightmare this year--a years-long dream--and wish her all of the good things and more!
It's a day of very big feelings as I learned that I'm a finalist for the World Fantasy Special Award β Non-Professional for Nightmare Magazine on the same day I announced that this is my last year as EIC at Nightmare. www.nightmare-magazine.com/nonfiction/e...
Very important 𧡠from my friend @tnflorvil.bsky.social. YES. Academics who publish books with university presses donβt get rich. We often LOSE money for the process of doing the research and the time of writing. We write because we care about our subjects! My next book could be a trade press/
Greetings, Psst, most academics aren't making much money from their book publications. They can't use their royalties. This means we are not popping our collars and purchasing prosecco or NA prosecco. The few scholars who are making bank are not publishing with university/academic presses.
If you are using AI/LLM you are not part of our community. We write. You push buttons trying to make a quick buck. That makes you a scammer not an artist.

"We do not and will not condone the deliberate use of commercialised LLM-based text/image extruders ("generative AI") by any of our members or affiliates. We condemn "AI" - and its apologists - in the strongest possible terms" If you're not saying this by now, you're saying the opposite
A.L. / Onnahinli is absolutely right. The rant screencapped below is shameful, cruel, & distasteful. It demonstrates a very loose grasp of history, of the ongoing structural violence of settler colonialism, & the colonial attitude of βwell it ended for βthemβ & theyβre fine & didnβt complainββ
I want to highlight this part of her rant because it's incredibly dismissive of Indigenous communities' centuries-long fight against environmental racism. While nothing in her article (if I can call it that) demonstrates mature, acceptable behavior, this part is the most egregious.
I am logged on for 2 hours to say I am appalled by what I read in the HWA newsletter. There are AI witch hunts ongoing where writers are being accused of using that garbage tech with no evidence. Telling ppl who use AI proudly to get out is not gatekeeping. Call out the writers and companies.
Today and every day, let's support human writers like @cornellwriter.bsky.social who is not only a great person and gifted writer, and also hires human artists for book covers! Her latest book is available for pre-order, and the launch is in a few weeks!
Anyway, so my book that was written with ZERO use of AI is out in less than 2 weeks. The Toronto launch is coming up soon thereafter (details below). The cover is also AI-free and by renowned Chilean illustrator Loreto Salinas Retamal. Pre-order now: www.starsandsabers.com/books/the-as...

If anyone was wondering, I have never and will never use AI in my writing. I am extremely anti-AI for so many reasons (Theft! Environmental damage! etc. etc.), and I have no interest in outsourcing my creativity to a machine built from extraction and oppression.
I am not active enough on social media to keep up, but here's me trying to catch up: - Gen AI sucks, and no you can't sell your Gen AI stuff at Can*Con (see our policies) - I love all the people-made art you've shared. Yes, yours, too 1/?

Some people saw themselves getting in on the ground floor of AI in creative writing as an industry, made their lil LLCs and canva flyers, and are now mad that they had a bad idea and everyone thinks they're silly.
If you come to me and say "Actually, I work for a company that does data centers for LLMs and they're CLEANING and ADDING more water, and they're doing it responsibly," I am going to hit you in the face with a pie. If ANYONE tries to justify use of aye-eye to me? We're done.
If you're using AI to make book covers or do *anything* that undermines actual art, you are not my buddy.
I don't even have caregivers or PSW to have that touch so... queer disabled loneliness x1000 for me π And to be very clear, I'm not in any way trying to make a comparison, or say that I'm worse off or anyone is worse off. Rather, to reflect at how much the loneliness hit me more acutely from this

Boosting for the wonderful @authorkaraj.bsky.social whose dog Katie's health procedures set them back quite a bit, and with the 6-month follow up, any coins that can go to help would be appreciated ππ»
It's been a bit since I posted Katie's GoFundMe, but I finally scheduled her 6 month post op follow-up, which involves at least a check up and x-rays (not sure about bloodwork), but last time, the visit was close to $1000 with all three. Shares are always appreciated ππΎ
