Watched Small Things Like These. A film about complicity then. Does this film's strength lie in keeping it "small"? Just one hand reaching out to help one woman and only because one man had that kind of backstory? Told in subtle tones, does it bring out the cruelty hidden beneath polite society?

I watched Obsession last night. It's a decently entertaining horror flick but the lack of any woman's perspective feels off given the topic. It reminded me of what I disliked so much about Manchester By The Sea.

Bei aller Wut auf Spahn aus hundert Gründen, dass ihm das jetzt das Karrieregenick bricht, sagt für mich in erster Linie was drüber aus, wo es den konservativen Hetero-Bürgis dann doch immer too much wird:

I’ve had this open as a tab for a while; our int’l touring earlier this year seems to have permanently wrecked my sleep so this morning at five I began exploring this open tab, clicking around. A remarkable, meticulous work: of art, of literature, what to say…give this your time.

A white poster-style image for “WHERE TO FIND ME IN THE AFTERLIFE.” Large black serif text appears above a colorful fictional geological map labeled “The Incarnate Continents,” with grid lines, a legend, and black circular Roman-numeral markers across the map.

Reminder! There are alternatives to Substack! Which do not have its ethical problems! (My newsletter is on Ghost, which is fabulous, and Buttondown is among the others I've heard praised.) Thread--

This kind of thing at Substack (including their Nazi problem and trans hate problem) are why my newsletter is at Ghost.org and always has been. Andrew Tate is a spectacularly vile human being accused of numerous violent crimes against women and hugely corrosive for young male minds.

At the end of the term I asked my college creative wriing students to submit anonymous thoughts on AI. No real surprises: Mood ranges from resignation to despair, capitulation from embittered erosion of standards to total, feelings of betrayal from deep to furious. 1/

Global warming has clearly been a major factor in the radicalisation of the Western right-wing. A truth so inconvenient for their interests and ideology that they preferred to cut ties with empirical reality itself. This then bred habits of belligerence and dishonesty that fed into other issue areas

Letter in today's Times by climate scientist Sir Brian Hoskins: "The discourse around net-zero is increasingly decoupled from…science and our changing weather. "Net-zero is not an arbitrary slogan, rather it is dictated by the laws of physics."
