im inclined to agree with the techlords that AI is dangerous. again, not because it's alive but because they're insisting on putting it in positions where it can hurt people, leaving aside the promised jobpocalypse they're promising us. chimp with gun

Been reading Chomsky takedowns for the last 20 years - all of them just regurgitate the same talking points. Obviously the Epstein stuff is horrible - but trying to draw some connection between that and his views on IR theory? Tenuous at best. I think it is mostly that he never admits he was wrong.

This should be read as Meta's opening salvo in a (really) yet-to-be-had debate about regulating AI. The security incidents at OpenAI/Anthropic is scaring them - not because the incidents are scary (they are) but because they are scared of the regulation that may come due to political fallout.

Don't agree w/much in the Wilson rev, but this was my problem: "The film asks us both to be horrified at war and to celebrate...sequences in which the reluctant warrior finally gets his hands on his bow and the blood starts flowing. The massacre of the suitors is probably the most enjoyable..."

Remember when the Trump Admin held a press conference at the WH and the President said “Don’t take Tylenol, there’s no downside. Don’t take it?” My paper shows partisan differences in Tylenol use - but no partisan differences in non-Tylenol acetaminophen use. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Our complete cowardice is striking in comparison to the brave people of Iran who took to the streets months ago to protest their own government and now take to the streets to defend their country from an aggressor - facing death both times. Solidarity 🇮🇷

NOW: B52 bombers are literally in the air on their way to Iran and hundreds of thousands of Iranians are in the streets waving flags and surrounding bridges & power plants. Difficult to imagine this has any precedent in modern warfare. (🎥 Al Jazeera)

Nearly everyone expected this to be over by this point. Now, in the third week of the Iran War, Asian refiners are finally beginning to fill their supply hole with further afield barrels. This is how MidEast and Asian scarcity becomes global scarcity.
