Masocore platformers in particular are largely a 21st century invention, and they're a kind of action design that doesn't make me go "I wish I was playing a normal arcade game instead" like most steam roguelites or metroidvanias. Better worlds are out there narfnra.itch.io/battle-narf

Etrian Odyssey 1 HD The groundwork for Etrian is laid solidly here with lots of satisfying character building, dungeoning, and a crunchy battle system and bosses. The game peaks on Floor 20's huge climax and the last stratum loses steam, but is is nice having these games escape Nintendo jail.
