Many have heard the expression “All models are wrong but some models are useful”. I prefer its counter-positive: “All models are wrong and most models are useless”, which I think more closely captures a lot of science.

Thomas Yeo@bttyeo.bsky.social · 3mo agoCross-validation is widely used to compare predictive performance — not just to benchmark algorithms, but for scientific applications like ranking biomarkers. But performance across folds isn't independent, so standard tests (e.g. paired t-test) inflate false positives. 2/N

As well as his work on memory traces, episodic counterfactuals, cognitive ontology, I'm hoping we'll get great new studies on memory and forgiveness for past wrongdoings in eg Colombia

At the end of my book on Memory and Remembering, I suggested that the debate between causalism and simulationism in the philosophy of memory is ill-construed. This suggestion caused some controversy, and I thought it would be a good idea to articulate that suggestion as clearly as possible. (1/2)
