Embarrassing stupidity aside, I can't help noting that, regardless of what Americans think, there isn't a single far-left person on that list. Such a strange country.

Finished "The Everyday Politics of Food Co-ops: Care, Aid and Community in Austerity Britain" (2025) by Celia Plender (University of Exeter). I put this book down almost half a year ago but finally returned to it and finished it.
Genuinely bizarre that Douthat would give up the cushiest job in journalism, where management clearly loves him, to join a newsroom whose defining attributes are its internal dysfunction and the constant stream of embarrassing leaks from disgruntled staffers.
I really struggle with this. Like the article states, social media is very toxic to kids. On the other hand, I fully agree that without social media, a generation of kids, especially from marginalized backgrounds, would have no connection. www.wired.com/story/bannin...
Banning Social Media for Kids Is a Bad Idea
The risks are real. But banning children from the internet could create new problems without solving the ones that really matter.

I want to go to a cafe and read a book very badly right now
Trump’s Big Ugly Bill has stripped SNAP from 4 million people. Families shouldn’t be forced to choose between putting food on the table and paying the bills. We must reverse these cruel cuts—in the richest country in the world, no one should go hungry.
I want to read Samuel Moyn's "Gerontocracy in America: How the Old Are Hoarding Power and Wealth—and What to Do About It". Dissent has an interview with him. Though I I must admit I am voting for an 80 year old in the primary this year (Senator Ed Markey) dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...

RFK Jr. is a eugenicist. Plain and simple. He's ignorant of science and medicine and lives in a conspiracy-addled world of his own mind. He's is destroying American public health and biomedicine.
RFK Jr. showing his eugenicist beliefs. Here he is today at The City Club in Cleveland: "The average American who died from COVID had 3.8 chronic diseases. So what was really killing them? It was almost impossible for COVID to kill a healthy person. It was killing people who were already sick."
listen hun if you can't handle the Washington Post editorial board at their the Texas gerrymander "freakout" is "not a threat to democracy" you don't deserve them at their "Virginia plunges America deeper into the gerrymandering abyss"
I am broken-hearted at the terrible news that my alma mater, @hampshirecollege.bsky.social, after 56 yrs, is closing. Its death is a victory for conformism, for corporatism, for higher education's dull love of hierarchy & status. It's a grievous defeat for imagination & experimentation.
Breaking news: Hampshire College, the liberal arts university in Amherst, announced that it would close after nearly six decades.

I found this very interesting from @dissentmag.bsky.social written by @resnikoff.bsky.social. I respect anarcho-leftists (a lot in the academic anthropology field) but I found this article a good reminder of my own personal beliefs on the administrative state. dissentmagazine.org/article/the-...

After MAGA, the left will need to be ready with a theory of how to rebuild the federal administrative state—not as it was before Trump, but as something better.

This is an interesting abstract. If I am reading it correctly, a city's (potential) dynamic, heterogenous population and cultural difference inside itself is more citizenship forming than a large state(?). Fascinating argument journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....

ST PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Tim Walz, Democrats' 2024 vice presidential candidate, says he will not run for a third term as Minnesota governor.
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not
And I think liberals should stop taking the bait and ceding ground on immigration. Immigration is good. Multiculturalism is good. Free trade is good. Stop being embarrassed to say so.

Bari Weiss is the logical endpoint of corporate media. This is what happens when people who hate journalism are in charge of it. The only way journalism works is when it’s independent from the power it’s supposed to hold to account, which means ownership can’t have anything to do with those in power
