Nazi Germany and other Fascist states actually prove the opposite. Normalising the language of fascism encourages its use and shifts the Overton window to a point where unspeakable thoughts become the subject of legitimate policy debate. Using Substack feels fairly indefensible at this point.

NEW: Substack founders finally respond to Substackers Against Nazis. They say Nazis publishing and earning money on their platform is fine with them. Their full statement here: substack.com/@hamish/note...

Hi everyone. Chris, Jairaj, and I wanted to let you know that we've heard and have been listening to all the views being expressed about how Substack should think about the presence of fringe voices on the platform (and particularly, in this case, Nazi views).
liust want to make it clear that we don't like Nazis either-we wish no-one held those views. But some people do hold those and other extreme views.
Given that, we don't think that censorship (including through demonetizing publications) makes the problem go away- in fact, it makes it worse.

One of the things I learn again and again being an artist in creative spaces is that it isn't about who has the best *ideas* or *ability*, it's all about who actually is able to pull through and make the thing. Even if someone else *could* make it better. Even if someone else had the *idea* first. 🧵

Having boundless ideas and skill is all about *potential*, which is kind of imaginary when you think about it. Actually doing the thing? That's real. That's something people can hold onto. Something people can connect with.

So if you are feeling discouraged because you know for a fact that there are people out there who can do a better job than you or feel like your ideas aren't original (so long as you're not actually stealing obv), then relax in the knowledge that it doesn't matter if someone COULD do it better.

When you are the one to make something with your own hands (or feet, or mouth, or however you manage to make something) no one can take that away from you! You are doing what others do not. It's not about whether someone else *could*, it's about whether you *did*. So choose to *DO*! Make the thing.

If SCREEN were to pass, you'd be required to scan your face and upload an ID to access this site because it allows "harmful" material. This affects you even if you don't care about sex work or porn.

Mike Lee's SCREEN Act, which heads to Senate Commerce Committee for markup on Wednesday, would expand age verification requirements to a nearly limitless scope of websites, and is supported by the architects of Project 2025.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Soojin is a brilliant and adaptable artist. Did you love the look of Pentiment? They were responsible for a ton of it. Out of the many, many ways they left their mark on that game, though, my favorites have to be the Landsknecht playing cards and story-time with Brother Sebhat.

i'm getting let go in september :^D (pained grinning) i'll be looking for work in any eligible field starting now, but especially then. if you need a concept artist / illustrator, i'm here <3

all my friends should be unemployed and have all the time in the world while also mysteriously having enough money to live comfortably

i remember the first time i ever got really behind on a commission (a long-term relationship was ending + i had to move several states away) i wouldn't allow myself to do personal work until it was done (not even like, a post-it doodle) and, my advice: Don't Ever, Ever Do That

Okay it's August, time for a refresh! July was way busier than I wanted but I am going to get back on track. I will post more and when I do I will focus more on art. There's things I need to finish and catch up on (some overdue, I promise I have not forgotten), and new stuff on the way~

This was amazing to put together for the past year, I'm so proud of everyone and amazed by what we made! 🧡 I got to contribute a lot of spot art and collaborate with great illustrators (such as in this preview here) to bring this project to life. Any uncredited writing throughout is also by me!
