comments like this suggest a stubborn refusal to concede real differences in values. maybe a woman who dedicates her life to the study of the classics simply believes that they illuminate modern life more effectively than our popular culture does. isn't she right to make that argument in public?

This piece is better about it, but one of my least favorite things about criticism is bemoaning what one thinks a thing should have been rather than engaging with what it is.
