On 9/11, hundreds of boxes of historical artifacts from New York's African Burial Ground and Five Points were in Sherrill Wilson's research lab at 6 World Trade Center. While most of the African Burial Ground artifacts were later recovered, the Five Points artifacts (~850,000) were destroyed.

Grand Canyon NP confirms a significant debris flow at Phantom Ranch. The Colorado River is closed, and evacuations have been happening. Bright Angel Creek watershed burned in the Dragon Bravo Fire, priming exactly this. We surveyed the river here in April with USGS GCMRC, anticipating this risk.

This is a huge issue for scholarship, not just for library collections. We can’t keep ebooks, etexts, ejournals, only rent them. Which means: - paying over & over again to achess the same titles, & - no guarantees of finding the same works later; they can be yanked at any time.
