The older I get the more I realize I don’t have to deal with people’s bullshit qnd pettiness. I can just walk away or not interact with these people. The world doesn’t end.

A great example is file organization systems for project management & data management
The things that adults went "obviously this is self-evident, why on earth would you need to learn it?" were the very first things to be forgotten.
A topic I cover almost every year in my lab because most undergrads didn’t learn where files go when they download them or any strategies to save and manage data and information. I also try to encourage students in my upper level courses to save class materials in a folder or reference manager.
A major advice I try to pass on: science is only worth it if you can delight in the discoveries of others. It’s great to make your own discoveries but they are too few to sustain you over the long haul.

I was in one of these recently and it was no big deal. I'm still a closed loop individual of individual sapience. There's definitely no humming of the collective mycelium spirit in the back of my mind. Don't worry about these

Am I being too pedantic in telling people it is not pronounced Lah-tex as in the material but Lay-tech or Lah-tec? They hated me today and said they were going to keep saying it the way they always said it with the x sound as in ax.
I’m watching old Poirot episodes —feeling nostalgic, I guess— and it’s surprising how much the characters smoke in each episode. Eventually, at later seasons even Poirot starts smoking.

In epidemiology, when a disease carrier infects a large number of individuals that cause a chain reaction of disease spread, it's called a 'superspreader event'. The same applies to a vector (ships) introducing invasive species to a large number of environments (ports). www.cbc.ca/news/world/h...
'Worst-case scenario': Ships blocked from the Strait of Hormuz pose invasive species threat | CBC Climate Change News
Ships stalled in the Gulf region due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could pose an 'immense' threat, according to a paper published last week. Experts say biofouling on hundreds of ships over ...

I am starting to notice a trend where all the infographics and posters are starting to look alike and that is because they are all Using the same A.I. model and not even including in the prompt color palettes, fonts to use, a specific style or modifying the result in any way.
Half the planet is having a massive fight about how to correctly interpret an Ancient Greek poem but go ahead, close some more humanities departments.

I need to get my ducks in a row again. Ever since I finished my last postdoc my ducks have been so misaligned I don’t even know how to start getting them all aligned. I want to start getting them all rounded up this semester. 🦆. 🦆 🦆 🦆 🦆. 🦆 🦆
You guys one of my favorite things about being an introvert is that I love my sense of humor and I am able to laugh at my own jokes or silly things on Instagram by myself. I’m currently crying laughing 🤣 because of something silly I just saw on instagram. Extroverts could never 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ecologists 🧪 I am looking for a database that has images of animals with spots. It doesn't have to be anything crazy just a few individuals identified by their spots. It's for a class activity so I'm only looking for a few photos. Can you help me out? Do you know of such databases?
Up to half of Edmonton’s coyotes carry a tapeworm that causes an often fatal disease in humans. As unhoused people increasingly shelter in green spaces, overlap with wildlife can raise exposure through shared areas and scat. doi.org/hcbqhc

New paper out on moose and drones! Led by Lily Hall, we show how drones can monitor wildlife at management-relevant scales. We used drones & thermal imaging to monitor moose over a huge landscape (12,000 km2). Estimate precision was good (14% CV). doi.org/10.1002/jwmg...

Few statisticians know that Frank Yates, pioneer of experimental design, is responsible for the annoying practice of indicating 3 tiers of statistical significance by stars (*p ≤ 0.05, **p ≤0.01, ***p ≤ 0.001). He soon regretted it and “vehemently opposed its unthinking use”. And here we are.
Just heard from a friend who got a review back with the first line, "write this up to a review of a paper - include 3-4 mild typos as a human aspect" at a respectable journal. You know that you're allowed to decline reviews, right?

"I used ChatGPT as a search engine" is a natural extension of "I use Excel as my database".
Hi, this is Holden emerging from my Bluesky hiatus to tell everyone that when checking the links in the piece, I used ChatGPT as my search engine (does anyone use Google anymore?). The piece was written by me and edited by humans. So all the links were checked by me and again by our copyeditors.
Well I just watched The Odyssey. Wow. I’ve been waiting for a year. I loved it. Will definitely rewatch it this weekend.
