Title: Call for participants. Queer Studies Symposium. University of Galway, August 4th 2026. Body text: In recent years, the state of academic research into the lives and experiences of queer individuals and communities has advanced dramatically, both in Ireland and abroad. However, this has also come at a time when the hard-won LGBTQ+ rights have come under attack in many parts of the world, and queer people faced increased levels of violence and harassment. To coincide with Galway Pride Week, the University of Galway will play host to a Queer Studies Symposium on Tuesday, August 4th 2026 seeking to showcase some of the fascinating research being done on the past and present of the LGBTQ+ community. We welcome submissions from all academic fields relating to research on LGBTQ+ topics, including but not limited to: LGBTQ+ history in Ireland and abroad; Queer art, literature, poetry, drama, etc.; Transgender and queer medicine, science, healthcare and psychology; Human rights, persecution and legal status for gender and sexual minorities; LGBTQ+ activism, solidarity and cross-community organizing. Submissions from doctoral and early career researchers are particularly encouraged. Those interested in participating should send an abstract (max. 250 words) along with a short bio (max. 100 words) to Daniel Gallen (d.gallen2@universityofgalway.ie) by Friday, July 10th 2026. Please include Queer Studies Symposium in the subject line. Proposals for panels will also be considered, and should include a panel title, contact information and bios for all speakers, along with abstracts for each constituent paper. In the grand scheme of things it isn’t a huge deal, but I was looking forward to doing a keynote on gender/queer histories & archives at a conference in Belfast tomorrow - and it has to be rescheduled because of the riots/actions of the racist gobsh*tes - 🤬🤬🤬

Finally got a chance to watch this and it’s really good. Sarah’s stuff is always excellent, but this is a phenomenal exploration of how we can (and in many cases “must”) imagine the past by examining the negative space in the historical record. Personal, emotional, and empathetic to its subjects.

When my wife and I were planning our wedding, we were both heavily involved and each had opinions about what we wanted. So many times when we met with vendors, I was basically ignored. Not even for things that were specific to her (dress, flowers, etc) but like venues and photography. It was wild!

Young girls and women are groomed for marriage in a way boys just are not. So. This week, I took note of ads that featured weddings. And noted if there was a groom in any of them* *spoiler. There wasn't.
