This, from the hugely experienced Irish courts reporter, Isabel Hayes, on the Minister for Justice’s performative outrage over an ad about children and consent, is worth reading.
Thank you so much to last night's speakers @drmarymcauliffe.bsky.social @tomhulme.bsky.social @niallherron.bsky.social for a brilliant panel on New Approaches to Sexuality in Ulster. As one audience member noted, each paper challenged assumptions about Queer History in new ways!
Long before pumpkins became the Halloween tradition, people in Ireland carved turnips into spooky faces to ward off wandering spirits. This wonderful Ghost Turnip is on display at the National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, and it's guaranteed to stop you in your tracks!
Seems like Peadar Tóibín and Aontu just don’t like the idea of agency and consent … especially for women and children, most especially embodied agency and consent, but then generally that’s a right wing, patriarchy, authoritarian position, so, of course🤷🏻♀️ #speirghorm
Need to stop assuming leftist views mean someone is an ally to women. Many men, including darlings of the left in Irish entertainment and beyond, have used the cover of progressive causes and legal threats to silence credible accusations of sexual violence from women. It's not a reliable indicator.
I loved my grandparents very dearly, but even as a child I was not into hugging that much - as anyone who knows me now, knows! Consent is something children need to know about, it gives them agency to express what’s within their comfort zone.
Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...
Just to add that what DRCC are talking about here is a long-standing, bog standard position in books about parenting and among child psychologists and social workers. This is something that was uncontroversial a quarter of a century ago.

Another edge lord comedy / pod bro using sexual violence against women for laughs … time to cancel them all. 🤬🤬
McDowell's article in the Irish Times is a mess but it is striking that he offers no assessment of why the "centre" is crumbling in France. It is because it has been marked by the very combination of ultra neoliberal economic and social policy and hardline security policy that define his politics.

How can anybody never mind survivors have trust in a Minister for Justice who weaponises rape for political gain - he doesn’t get it - this is unacceptable and he needs to go #rape #speirgorm #ireland
