One of the things this gets at is the complete incoherence of our approach to devolution. Given we all accept that however we divide England up is going to be a bit arbitary, it really does make sense to work backwards from the number of "regions" we want to end up with. Yet we keep failing to do so

NEW Merging police forces across England & Wales will cost £2 billion up-front. That's the figure given by GMP Chief Sir Stephen Watson... Also, new details about plans for the National Police Service - and who will lead it. My thoughts … free to read! www.dannyshaw.net/post/what-wa...

Really enjoying this new more relaxed and open style of government comms from Andy Burnham Such a big change that it must be a direction coming from the top - even Cooper and Baroness Casey speaking without any notes

Again I want to point out that the gods are not punishing Odysseus for his actions at Troy. They *do not care* about the Trojan horse. They think he is better than other people and pious. It's Poseidon specifically that hates him for what he did to the Cyclops.

This whole discourse has been Film People don’t understand character and Literature People don’t understand acting. The core of her critique is that changes made for the film mean characters’ motivations are incoherent with their actions. That is a good critique, and it’s also true

It’s been weird seeing people praise this shitty review and it’s failure to understand what’s actually happening on screen

I wonder if they will change the Forces' recruitment ads? Recent Navy ones do that "Born in X, Made by the Navy" thing. They don't align with this "born in the heat sink of the data centre, work in the heat sink of the data centre" provincialism that's being talked about today.

the ideal academic life is being an eccentric Victorian lord. Invent a stamp licking machine at 22. Get elected to the Royal Academy for counting the beetles on your estate. Die in an arsenic explosion. The perfect life.

Real underpriced reason why a snap election is a dreadful idea is that it would likely give Reform a shot in the arm just as they’re flagging and, even if it went well on Labour’s end, would almost certainly make Nigel Farage leader of the opposition

To state the extremely obvious, if Burnham calls an early election then his best case scenario consists of Labour losing 60+ seats, Reform surging enormously, and the narrative being that he’s a moron with no authority who blew up his giant majority for no reason. (The narrative will be correct)

very funny that after all the “Emily Wilson is going to longhouse Western Civilization with her woke Odyssey”, Emily Wilson herself is like “yeah, a bit too much ‘healing trauma’ and not enough ‘relishing in the blood of your enemies’ in the new movie”

I agree but I just don't get it. If you think the public will vote for tax increases, why not just do them and bet that the positive benefits will make people forgive you come 2029?

The film was “what if the Odyssey, but Arthurian” Because Odysseus the chivalric knight would not have made the same decisions as Homer’s, Nolan had to strip him of agency, so we got none of his cleverness Instead shit just happens to him as a kind of purgatory for the “sins” he committed in Troy

I agree with @wallaceme.bsky.social both that I would love a talented filmmaker to properly commit to “the deeply unsettling worldview of Bronze Age Greeks” and also…I understand why Hollywood studios wouldn’t want to touch that.

Also it's so enjoyable to watch two teams who respect each other, give everything, and then embrace each other after the game, after all the horrible bollocks of last Wednesday
