We've permitted a situation where third countries can enter the war on the Russian side without any significant western response, but we still act as though western intervention in the conflict (e.g., deployment of anti-air units on Ukrainian territory) would be unthinkable escalation.

The obsession with whitespace in UI design completely confounds me. It seems to consist of people who have never used a specific tool looking at the UI of said tool, seeing that it has a lot of useful information in it, and deciding that it needs less.

I want to point out that it's both legally and ethically irrelevant who was sovereign over a territory (like Ceuta) "first". Whatever its political history, this is an internationally recognised part of the de jure territory of Spain in the post-WWII international legal system,
Personally I'm pretty "open borders", but I still believe that borders are necessary because countries are necessary. I don't think they should be forcibly erased. What happened in Ceuta, and also what happened on Poland's eastern borders, verges on forcible erasure, a kind of trolling.

My local secondary school - not a bad one - has a persistent absence rate of 22% as of the last OFSTED (2023). BTW OFSTED is also very valuable exactly because it tracks and reports such things.
Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social · 3d agoThe interesting thing about school closures during covid (agree with them or not) is they had much less impact on long-term academic outcomes than people expected (me included). But much more long-term impact on mental health and attendance.
Basically this. There’s this dumb idea that you collect citizens assemblies (which will mostly be made up of well-meaning busy-bodies), you hold a referendum (which will likely be about anything but the actual document it is supposed to pass), and then legislate to pass it and it will be entrenched

It weakens the longstanding norms you actually rely upon just when you need them most. Tho tbh I think it's vanishingly unlikely to be done so I'm not all that worried.

If there’s a piece of economic illiteracy that annoys the hell out of me, it’s the idea that houses bought by landlords aren’t part of the housing supply.
The Poland-Belarus border crisis is possibly the right comparison, since that was an entirely artificial crisis created by the Belarus government flying people in from eg Iraq and bussing them straight to the border. In this case, it appears to be Morocco spreading disinfo amongst its own people.
