Question for those who haven't been part of the climate movement. Please repost this for a wider response, I think it'll be interesting. Now that the northern hemisphere is effectively on fire, now that climate change is running amok, what is it you didn't get all these years?

Is it better to spend taxpayer money to encourage more driving, or to use that money and invest in sustainable transport so we’re less exposed to volatile fuel prices? Can we also make our supply chains more sustainable, so fuel prices don’t hike up the cost of everything else?

Patrick McAllister 🌱@patdbmcallister.bsky.social · 6mo agoI am upset and angry at another serious car crash in Hotwells. The front of the Merchants Arms pub has been caved in. I was informed that there are injuries but no fatalities. This is exactly why our administration is bringing in 20mph limits - we need them.
I’ve been thinking about this - the UK should have escalated fuel duty as planned over the last 20-odd years, which would allow for faster fuel efficiency and transition to alternatives, but also the ability to cut fuel duty in times of crisis and keep inflation down.
Ketan Joshi@ketanjoshi.co · 6mo agoToday, Norway is voting on whether to massively slash taxes on fossil fuels used for road transport I think this is a good reminder that slowly switching the passenger car fleet to EVs over many decades is good - but not sufficient to protect people from increasingly fuel shocks today and tomorrow

This sounds like a job for @urbantruth.bsky.social The consultation includes a removal option, but intentionally makes it look bad or foolish. However, removing a motorway cutting through a city centre is the ONLY viable option!

The crossing point on the only main road I pass with my kids on the cycle to primary school. 3 of the 4 bollard/posts with buttons have been hit by drivers. Latest victim is traffic light which has been been hit by a driver on the wrong side of the road. Or a cyclist… @bearswayfriends.bsky.social
@octopus.energy I just had to delete and reconnect my devices. IO has offered a 2 hour slot to charge 50%. ~35-40kWh in two hours with a 7kW charger… something doesn’t add up!

Made it to the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome with child 1 today for the first time. Incredible venue. Hitting those steep corners for the first time is scary but so much fun.

Loads of parents & kids cycling to West rugby club this morning, but still no safe routes.
I’ll admit to breaking a road rule today. Light turned red ahead of me. I could have stopped, but didn’t. Car behind me flew through, so if I had stopped, I’d be flattened. 20+ years of sharing the road with cars and my spidey-senses are finely honed.

I’d like to see @octopus.energy offer a tariff for EV & solar/home battery owners that works in the winter better. Lack of sunlight means our battery usually runs out just in time for afternoon peak. A second cheap window at 2-4ish (with higher £ peak) would see us through.
