Genuinely, this concern about AI is one of the reasons why I think having friction in video games is good and why it's increasingly important to have games that simply exist instead of catering to our expectations. Reposting this message from Kojima about "pre-digested" art:

And he said, "If everyone likes it, it means it's mainstream. It means it's conventional. It means it's already pre-digested for people to like it. And I don't want that. I want people to end up liking things they didn't like when they first encountered it, because that's where you really end up loving something."

“The Al is not just telling you what you want to hear. It is training you, one conversation at a time, to need less friction, expect more agreement, and become slightly less capable of handling a situation where someone pushes back on you”

had a breakthrough on the IZB shadows i've been fantasizing about for the past few months. they work flawlessly now AND they're fast :)

Real-time Rendering with a Neural Irradiance Volume Delivering fast inference (~1ms/frame), a tiny memory footprint (1-5MB), 10x quality gains over probe-based methods @ equivalent mem budgets, bringing neural rendering within reach of consumer hardware without RT or denoising. arnocoomans.be/eg2026

i'm a few days into this iteration of building my own renderer, and feeling good enough that i figured i would start a thread to track my progress and help keep me accountable. #gamedev

finally got my new shadow system somewhat functional! still a ton of kinks to work out, and more than a little bit of optimization to do, but it's nice to see that this method does in fact work! non ray-traced pixel perfect shadows (in theory)

BREAKING: Silksong will be out on September 4. Two weeks from today. Really. Often, games that take 7+ years to make are plagued by mismanagement and painful burnout. But for Silksong? Team Cherry was having a blast. They still are. This is their story: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...

Why ‘Silksong’ Took Seven Years to Make

The highly anticipated indie game has been in production for so long that it’s become an internet meme

Made this last night because I wanted to have an example I can point to whenever I see people have bad player ship/plane/vehicle/camera controllers that just 1:1 mirror game input and how much of a difference even a tiny amount of smoothing can make to game feel.
