Pretty good writer. Reasonably competent HusbandParentMusician. Passable teacher. Old, stubborn, and grumpy. Forever fighting book bans, ignorance, and cruelty. He/Him.

Looking forward to adding Titan Of The Stars @ekjohnston.bsky.social to our junior high library, my 8th graders will love this Titanic meets Alien inspired book that is so much more than the sum of its parts. Friendship. Bravery. Class struggles. Breakups. Love. And screaming blood-soaked terror. 💜

Two teens on the book cover Titan of the stars, surrounded by intricate designs, and haunted by that specific alien purple color

This is the tragic yet logical result of a decades-long project—undertaken by rightwing politicians and “business-minded” administrators alike—to distort the meaning of higher education, to deny the intrinsic value of the pursuit of knowledge, to deprive us all of richer, more purposeful lives.

President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v

"don't make enough money" is a fig leaf All those degree programs--social work, art, etc.--have disproportionately female student bodies. This is designed to make it harder for women to attend college--college education being a key factor in women's autonomy from men & left-leaning voting pattern.

The WNBA has never had a trans woman play in the league’s 30-year history and now the right and other anti-trans activists are hammering the league over something that has never been an issue, proving once again it isn’t about protection but exhibiting cruelty toward trans people.

kids should know how to type, yes. but i am telling you as a teacher, this is BROADLY not the reason kids are using ChatGPT. They use it for the same reason adults do: because it's a shortcut and they don't see the value of the work they are being asked to do or the skill underlying it.

I wonder if students today would be less likely to lean on AI for writing assignments if schools had made sure they could touch-type (at least 60wpm) before having them submit all their assignments online. 1/🧵

"Under Act 372, individuals who “furnish a harmful item to a minor” could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor. Those who violate the law could face jail time or fines of up to $10,000."

On my first day in Major British Writers I at Lawrence University in 1998, Prof. Bertrand Goldgar, cold-opened with a recital of Larkin’s “This Be the Verse.” I can still hear it in his voice now—a treasured memory of college. I took every class he taught. I am so sorry for students in Florida.

With my maternal grandparents, I'd be fresh from the Azores, working in a Fall River textile mill. Impossible noise and heat. And from breathing fabric particles and chemicals develop pulmonary fibrosis, and die for lack of breath. It was the same for my mom and aunts. So . . .

Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?

I hate that we've memory-holed 2020. My spring 2020 experience was 1) seeing ambulances pulling out dying seniors from a downtown Palo Alto center 2) the GOP's claim of "brutal lockdown" was remote school for only spring/fall 2020, with masked return in Jan-and that was far stricter than most places

Back in 2020, as a pediatric hematologist married to a physician, we signed up to volunteer in a field hospital for patients with COVID. We wrote our wills and worried about getting our kids sick. I posted about terrifying outcomes in kids and received death threats. Fauci is a goddamn hero.

Here are some of the songs I've been listening to this summer. It starts with a song Michelle and I love by Glen Hansard, a great musician who passed tragically this week. Our hearts go out to his family.

The problem with auto-buy authors is I don’t read the book jacket descriptions, and just jump in. So today I was embarrassing far into Titan of the Stars @ekjohnston.bsky.social before realizing it was the Titanic disaster, and the iceberg is terrifying aliens devouring everyone. 😂😅😓 Love this.

Book cover for Titan of the stars to protagonist inside a spaceship with purples, reds oranges, lovely indeed, and foreboding
