It felt like understatement then, even more so today. It’s hard to explain the extent of appreciation and affection I have for Sam Neill. An actor being in one favorite movie is special, but four? Five? He’s indelible. I’m heartbroken he’s gone, but I am eternally grateful for what he left behind.

Incoming sap. At this moment, and in many moments before, there isn’t an actor I appreciate more than Sam Neill. He’s fearless, which can be a little frightening, and yet he emanates tenderness. He’s a central part of so many of my favorite movies. And he turns 78 next week. A gentleman legend.

Sam Neil has so many great performances that it feels almost reductive to focus on one scene. Except it's one of the most iconic scenes in movie history and all of it, The groundbreaking CGI, the sweeping John Williams score *doesn't* work without the authentic joy and wonder of Neill's performance
