Gotta go with Mass Effect. Being part of the creation of a totally new Sci-Fi IP, and the narrative brilliance that shines in so much of that game... Or maybe... Alan Wake 2? Yeah, the application of modern survival horror to classic Remedy storytelling... Or the Resident Evil 2 Remake? Yeah...

It's #QuestionsWithCauseway time, and this week we wanna know... If you could go back in time and be part of the development team of any game, which would you pick?

You wake, not out of slumber, but still somewhere in it. In a dreamlike haze, your head dips under a curtain, as a singer's voice floats softly in the background. A figure in a suit leans out over a crystal orb sat in the center of the room. KERMIT THE FROG: Welcome... to thee Velvet Room.

For REAL. A good game designer isn't just a robot that intakes complaints and outputs solutions. Can you figure out a design change that enhances the game's goals and themes instead of harms them? Does the game NEED a design change? Or is this an aesthetic problem? Is this an AUDIENCE problem?

Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing. I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

I need to see The Great Saiyaman in an Ace Attorney-style game. No, I don't know how that would work. Yes. I need it.

This week's #QuestionWithCauseway is on the lighter side of things. With Spider-Man in theatres and Wolverine previews dropping, we're looking to the future of superhero games. Which hero do you think deserves their own game (and what genre should it be in)? Oh... WRONG ANSWERS ONLY!

Triply topical—open-world GTA, Saints-Row-esque game where you play as the Joker just being a chaos gremlin. 5 stars wanted sicks The Batman on you.

"Indies will save us" No! YOU WILL SAVE INDIES! Go leave a review for that neat indie game you like, share the trailer for an upcoming game you're anticipating, tell your fave developer they did a good job, go tell people about such and such game that's just come out, you can make a difference!

Everything in Ghost of Tsushima. Never have I so effortlessly 100%-ed a game. There world is full (yet not too full) of wonderful discoveries that are rarely *just* collectibles: new attire, skill points from cute foxes, song-giving fireflies, and the haikus...I adore the haikus. Peaceful moments.

The opening to Mass Effect 2 still gives me chills. The reintroduction to the familiar world and ship...only to have it all ripped away with some of the best scripted sequence execution and sound design I've experienced. A total wow! moment that sets the tone for an amazing game to come.

Happy Thursday! It's time for another #QuestionsWithCauseway! What gaming moment was so surprising you couldn't believe it was happening? Games have the ability to subvert our expectations and keep us guessing. Tell us about the scene that dropped your jaw in disbelief!

Do we need this? I don’t think we do. Especially in today’s climate this seems…I’ll call it callous. Perhaps it’s the framing. (And yes I read the article; I’m not just responding to the headline). Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe it’s just not for me.

Welcome to Hater Week, a week of stories examining what it means to be a hater (and a lover), where we'll vent about some of our biggest pet peeves in games and life, and give others space to do the same. aftermath.site/aftermath-site...

Hater Week

Strangely I haven’t played an abundance of indies this year. Developing indie games makes it challenging to unwind with them in my free time. Paired with my unique brand of neurodivergence that can make frequent context switching and novelty-seeking a hurdle, I have to make an effort to play. (1/2)

This week's #QuestionsWithCauseway is about our community. Indie devs continue to make magic under the harshest of circumstances. Sometimes a kind word makes all the difference. So this week, we want to know... What's your favorite indie game of the year so far?

So The Odyssey discourse(s). First, I love me Classicists (y’all know I do). Yet, looking at Nolan’s Odyssey (or any Odyssey) I believe they are looking for THE Odyssey. And that…will never happen. We’ll never have an adaptation that speaks to an “intended” Greek audience b/c we aren’t that. (1/3)
